Nipsey’s Story: Hyperthyroidism in Cats

Like many cats his age, Nipsey (pictured above) was suffering from feline hyperthyroidism. He is only nine years old, but he isn’t alone. Hyperthyroidism in cats is the most common glandular disorder in middle-aged to senior cats.

Feline hyperthyroidism is caused by an increase in the production of thyroid hormones from an enlarged thyroid gland. Usually, this enlarged thyroid gland is caused by a non-malignant tumor (although in some rare forms of hyperthyroid disease, a malignant tumor is present).

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism in pets may include:

  • A faster heart rate
  • Hyperactivity
  • Weight loss
  • Increased appetite
  • Vomiting / diarrhea
  • Increased thirst
  • Hair loss
  • Shortness of breath
  • Seborrhea
  • Chronic skin conditions

(Remember that several other diseases affecting older cats, like diabetes and kidney failure, may have similar symptoms, so it’s important to have proper tests done by a veterinarian professional).

an overproduction or imbalance will cause havoc in the body

Because thyroid hormones affect almost all the organs, an overproduction or imbalance will cause havoc in the body; often resulting in secondary diseases and health problems. Common secondary health issues cats experience are heart conditions, feline hypertension, damage to the eyes, kidneys, and brain, and feline liver disease. Usually, once the underlying hyperthyroidism is controlled, these secondary conditions will ease or completely subside.

Susan (Nipsey’s mom) had begun giving Nipsey the popular cat hyperthyroidism supplement – NHV Resthyro. She began with the maintenance dosage of 1 drop for every 2 lbs— but it didn’t seem like it was working. Susan contacted NHV and the NHV Pet Experts quickly recommended increasing the dosage to the therapeutic level. Here’s Susan’s story in her words:

We had started using Resthryo for our 9 year old cat, Nipsey in May 2015. We were giving him the 1 drop for every 2 lbs but had not seen a difference so the vets wanted us to start on the prescription drugs. The drugs did not sit well for Nipsey so we had to stop after 3 days. That is when I decided to call NHV and I am glad we did! They suggested to increase the dosage and after only 1 week, we saw the improvement. He was back to his playful nippy self, running around us and acting like the young cat that he is. His coat & eating habits are better. I wished I had contacted NHV sooner. We are so happy with how he is doing.

It’s so important to remember that every little cat body is different. Don’t hesitate to call us, email us, or chat with us if you have any questions. A little tweak in dosage often makes a world of difference.

We’re so glad Nipsey is doing better and that Susan shared her story with us!
