Canine Lymphoma: Understanding the Diagnosis
It can be overwhelming hearing that your fur baby has lymphoma. One moment you may notice a swollen lymph node or a change in your dog’s energy level, and the next you’re facing a difficult decision about testing and treatment.
Lymphoma is one of the most common and one of the most treatable cancers in dogs. Depending on the type of lymphoma, many dogs respond well to therapy and can enjoy an excellent quality of life for months or even years after diagnosis.
In this blog, we’ll explain what canine lymphoma is, the different types of lymphoma, early warning signs, how veterinarians diagnose it, available treatment options, prognosis, and how supportive care may help improve your dog’s comfort throughout treatment.
What Is Canine Lymphoma?
Lymphoma is one of the most frequently diagnosed malignancies in dogs. It is a cancer that develops from lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that plays a vital role in the immune system. Lymphocytes are found in many parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract, skin, and many other organs; for that reason, lymphoma may be considered a systemic disease.

Schedule a consultation with one of our expertsWhat Causes Lymphoma in Dogs?
Unfortunately, there is no single answer to this question. Some evidence suggests that lymphoma can develop through a combination of environmental influences and genetic susceptibility.
Some of the potential contributing factors include:
- Genetic predisposition
- Age (most commonly middle-aged to older dogs)
- Breed predisposition
- Chronic immune dysregulation
- Environmental exposures
- Rare infectious causes
Certain breeds appear to have a higher risk, such as:
- Boxer
- Golden Retriever
- Labrador Retriever
- Rottweiler
- Saint Bernard
- Scottish Terrier
- Bullmastiff
However, it is important to note that although these breeds may be predisposed, lymphoma can develop in any breed. Lymphoma is also not contagious and is generally not caused by anything pet owners did or failed to do.
Signs of Lymphoma in Dogs
The signs of lymphoma can vary depending on the type and location it is affecting
Many dogs initially appear completely healthy. Early signs may include:
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Mild lethargy
- Activity that is reduced
- Decreased appetite
- Weight loss
- Increased drinking or urination
As lymphoma progresses, dogs may develop:
- Marked lethargy
- Progressive weight loss
- Lack of appetite
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Difficulty breathing (mediastinal lymphoma)
- Abdominal enlargement
- Persistent skin lesions (cutaneous lymphoma)
When Should You See Your Veterinarian?
If you observe any persistent, enlarged lymph nodes, your fur baby should be examined by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Early diagnosis may improve quality of life.
Types of Lymphoma in Dogs
Canine lymphoma is a diverse group of cancers that can be classified according to anatomical location, cell type, grade, and biological behavior. Here we will list the most common:
- Multicentric Lymphoma: This accounts for most of all canine lymphoma cases. It primarily affects the peripheral lymph nodes, spleen, and liver. Some dogs can present with enlarged lymph nodes but otherwise may appear surprisingly normal during the early stages of the disease.
- Alimentary (Gastrointestinal) Lymphoma: This form develops in the digestive tract. Some of the most common signs are vomiting, weight loss, reduced appetite, low protein levels, chronic diarrhea or constipation. Definitive diagnosis often requires abdominal ultrasound and intestinal biopsy.
- Mediastinal Lymphoma: This form of lymphoma affects the chest cavity, and some of the signs are rapid breathing, exercise intolerance, coughing, pleural effusion, etc.
- Cutaneous lymphoma: This form affects the skin, and some of the signs include red plaques, thickened skin, hair loss, scaling, non-healing skin lesions, and Itching. For this type of cancer, definitive diagnosis usually requires skin biopsies.
- Extranodal Lymphoma: These are types of lymphomas that occasionally arise outside the lymphatic system, such as in the eyes, kidneys (renal lymphoma), central nervous system, nasal cavity, bones, etc.
Phenotype (B-Cell vs T-Cell Lymphoma)
Another important way to classify canine lymphoma is by the phenotype of the lymphocyte present. Most lymphomas originate from either B lymphocytes (B cells) or T lymphocytes (T cells), which are important components of the immune system.
Knowing whether a dog has B-cell or T-cell lymphoma can be helpful to better understand the expected clinical behavior of the disease, estimate prognosis, and select the most appropriate treatment.
B-Cell Lymphoma
The most common immunophenotype in dogs. Many of the common high-grade B-cell lymphomas respond well to chemotherapy and are generally associated with longer remission and survival times than high-grade T-cell lymphoma. Remission refers to a period during which the clinical signs and detectable evidence of lymphoma have partially or completely disappeared following treatment.
T-Cell Lymphoma
T-cell lymphoma is less common compared to B-cell lymphoma. Unfortunately, many high-grade T-cell lymphomas may behave more aggressively and have shorter remission and survival times. However, this is not true for every T-cell lymphoma.
Biological/Clinical Behavior: How Fast Does the Lymphoma Progress?
Another very important part of understanding lymphoma in dogs is how fast the disease progresses. B-cell and T-cell lymphomas can have different biological/clinical behaviors, ranging from slow progression to a more aggressive disease.
Indolent lymphoma grows slowly and may progress over months and, in some cases, years. These lymphomas can be either B- or T-cell. One example is T-zone lymphoma, which is a slow-growing T-cell lymphoma. Some low-grade B-cell lymphomas can also behave indolently. Some dogs with these forms may feel well for long periods, and depending on the individual case, very close monitoring may be recommended before treatment is initiated.
However, high-grade lymphoma progresses and spreads much faster. Both B- and T-cell lymphomas can be high-grade, although high-grade T-cell lymphoma is often associated with a more aggressive clinical behaviour.
This is why B-cell does not automatically mean a good prognosis, and T-cell does not automatically mean a poor prognosis. The lymphoma subtype, grade, location, stage, clinical signs, and response to treatment all help determine how the disease is likely to behave and the best approach for each pet.

How Is Lymphoma Diagnosed?
Diagnosing lymphoma usually involves several steps, such as:
- Physical Examination: Your veterinarian will carefully evaluate the lymph nodes, abdomen, chest, body condition, etc.
- Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA): A small needle is inserted into an enlarged lymph node, and he collected cells are examined by cytology under the microscope by a clinical pathologist. This procedure is often sufficient to diagnose lymphoma.
- Flow Cytometry: It helps to determine if the lymphoma is B- or T-Cell origin.
- PARR (PCR for Antigen Receptor Rearrangements): It detects clonal lymphocyte populations and can provide additional evidence when lymphoma is suspected, but other diagnostic tests are inconclusive. Depending on the receptor rearrangement detected, it can also provide information consistent with B- or T-cell lineage.
- Histopathology: In some cases, a biopsy may be needed when additional classification is necessary or if the above tests do not provide a clear diagnosis.
- Blood Test: New technologies have led to the development of liquid biopsy tests, which look for cancer-associated biomarkers using a simple blood sample. Because only a blood sample is needed, testing can often be performed alongside the routine blood work requested by your veterinarian. These tests can provide additional information to support the detection of lymphoma when interpreted together with other diagnostic findings. Recent peer-reviewed research, for which I was the first author, also demonstrated that blood-based testing may have value for monitoring treatment response and disease status in dogs receiving CHOP chemotherapy for multicentric lymphoma. In the study, changes in blood test results showed good agreement with changes in clinical disease status. However, liquid biopsy technology continues to evolve and should currently be used alongside physical examination and established diagnostic and monitoring methods, rather than as a stand-alone test for treatment monitoring.
- Staging Tests: Additional tests may help determine the extent of disease and guide treatment decisions. Those often include complete blood count (CBC), serum biochemistry, urinalysis, thoracic radiographs, abdominal ultrasound, and, in some cases, bone marrow evaluation.
Lymphoma Treatment in Dogs
Treatment recommendations depend on the type of lymphoma, stage, phenotype, overall health, and the pet owner’s goals. The most common treatment options include:
- CHOP Chemotherapy: This protocol combines four pharmaceutical treatments. This remains the gold standard for most dogs with multicentric lymphoma. Many dogs achieve complete remission and maintain a good quality of life during the CHOP treatment.
- Single-Agent Chemotherapy: Some patients may receive an alternative protocol depending on lymphoma subtype. Some of these drugs may also be used as part of rescue therapy when lymphoma does not respond to the initial treatment or returns after remission.
- Steroid Alone: It may temporarily improve clinical signs but normally results in shorter survival times compared with multi-agent chemotherapy. It is important to note that before starting a veterinarian-prescribed steroid as a corticosteroid treatment, pet parents should consult a veterinarian or veterinary oncologist, as it may affect diagnostic testing results and subsequent treatment response.
- Radiation Therapy: For localized forms of lymphoma, it may be appropriate.
- Surgery: For extranodal cases, surgery may be useful but is rarely curative.
Can Lymphoma Be Cured?
Unfortunately, most canine lymphomas are not considered curable, but they are often highly treatable. Many dogs can experience prolonged remission while maintaining a good quality of life.
However, it is important to note that every dog is different, and your veterinary oncologist is the best person to discuss your dog’s individual prognosis.
How Long Can Dogs Live With Lymphoma?
The truth is that there is no single life expectancy for dogs with lymphoma. The prognosis can vary depending on the lymphoma subtype, grade, B- vs T-cell phenotype, anatomical location, stage, overall health of the dog, the treatment selected, and the response to therapy. Dogs with high-grade lymphoma often have a more rapidly progressive disease but may respond strongly to chemotherapy, while some indolent lymphomas progress slowly and can have substantially longer survival times.

Supportive Care for Dogs with Lymphoma
Supporting your dog’s overall health throughout treatment is just as important as treating the cancer itself.
Supportive care may include excellent nutrition, maintaining hydration, managing nausea, supporting gastrointestinal health, monitoring body weight, regular bloodwork, stress reduction, and appropriate exercise.
At NHV, we believe supportive care should work alongside your veterinarian’s treatment plan, not replace it. Depending on your fur baby’s individual needs, your veterinarian may recommend nutritional support and selected herbal supplements to help maintain comfort and overall wellness.
- NHV BK-Detox: BK-Detox is formulated to support healthy liver and kidney function. Supporting the normal detoxification pathways may help overall wellness during cancer treatment.
- NHV Natures Immuno: It may also provide complementary immune support for dogs with lymphoma. Its five functional mushrooms (Turkey Tail, Cordyceps, Himematsutake, Reishi, and Shiitake) contain bioactive compounds such as beta-glucans that have been studied for their immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and inflammatory-response-supporting properties. Because lymphoma affects lymphocytes, supporting balanced immune function and overall wellness may be particularly relevant during treatment. Natures Immuno is a Health Canada-notified Veterinary Health Product (NN.G7U0) and should be used alongside, not as a replacement for, veterinary cancer treatment.
- NHV PetOmega 3: It may provide nutritional support for dogs with lymphoma, particularly by helping maintain a healthy inflammatory response, body condition, skin and coat health, and overall wellness. The omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA have also been studied as supportive nutrients in dogs with cancer, especially in relation to inflammation and maintaining nutritional status.
- The NHV Gastrointestinal Lymphoma Kit, which includes Felimm, Milk Thistle, Yucca, and Plantaeris, may be considered as complementary support alongside the treatment plan established by your veterinarian or veterinary oncologist. The formulations contain herbal ingredients selected to support digestive function, appetite, normal inflammatory and immune responses, liver health, and overall support.
Those supplements are intended as supportive care and are not a substitute for chemotherapy, treatments for lymphoma, or other cancer therapies. For this reason, dogs undergoing cancer treatment may receive multiple medications; always discuss supplements with your veterinarian or veterinary oncologist before introducing them.
Final Thoughts
Although a diagnosis of canine lymphoma is tough, it is important to remember that lymphoma is one of the most treatable cancers in dogs and early diagnosis, appropriate staging, individualized treatment, and comprehensive supportive care can significantly improve both quality of life and the treatment outcomes.
Also, veterinary oncology continues to advance, with innovations in molecular diagnostics, immunophenotyping, and minimally invasive blood-based monitoring helping veterinarians diagnose and follow lymphoma more accurately than ever before.
Working closely with your veterinary oncologist gives your dog the best opportunity for successful treatment and a good quality of life.
