Don’t we promise to do what’s best for our pets, to protect them from whatever bad things may come their way. Whether it’s protecting them against parasites, feeding them the best diet or bringing them to the doctor at the first sign something isn’t right. But sometimes there isn’t much we can do other than support them and help them fight off the nasties on their own.
One example is the Canine Papilloma Virus. The only way, besides surgical intervention, that this virus can resolve, is for the body to fight it off. As pet parents we can help to keep their immune system in tip-top shape so they can fight this battle.

What is the papilloma virus?
The canine papilloma virus can cause several types of growths. The most common of these is canine papilloma virus-1 (CPV1) which causes wart-like growths to appear on the dogs’ skin or mucous membranes. The growths have a fringe-like or cauliflower type look to them and can be quite unsightly. Although the mouth is the most common location for these growths, they can also appear on any part of the body. These growths aren’t nice to look at, but they are not inherently dangerous. These growths vary greatly in size. They may only be the size of a pin head, or they may also grow to a few inches in diameter.
Who gets papilloma growths?
Papilloma growths generally occur on dogs whose immune systems are either immature or somehow compromised. Puppies, dogs who are on medications to combat auto-immune diseases or dogs with compromised immune systems due to underlying disease are at the highest risk of being infected with the papilloma virus.
How are papilloma growths treated?
Once the body recognizes these growths, it begins to respond against the virus. Once the body begins this response, many papilloma growths regress on their own and eventually completely disappear. However, because of the often awkward location of these growths, they may sometimes become infected and quite sore.
Sometimes these growths can appear in unfortunate locations such as the pads of the feet or on the gums. The growths on the pads of the feet tend to be much more tender than others, and you may want to consult your veterinarian about whether it is beneficial to remove growths that are causing pain. It may be beneficial, however, to allow your dogs’ body to fight the virus on its own. This will greatly decrease the likelihood of further infection, as the body has ‘learned’ how to fight it off on its own and created a better immune response.
How can I prevent papilloma growths?
Viral papilloma growths are contagious and are passed between dogs by contact with an infected dog or objects in their environment. Young puppies and other immune-compromised pets, such as those on immunosuppression medications are most prone to these types of growths. Keeping their immune system well supported is extremely important. Of course, if you know a dog is infected with the papilloma virus, you should avoid socialization with that dog until the growths are cleared up. Boosting your dog or puppy’s immune system is also extremely beneficial.
If your pup happens to come down with a papilloma growth, there is no need to worry. These growths rarely, if ever, cause serious side effects. Helping to boost your pup’s immune system with these supplements is the best way to keep your promise of good health to your pup.
