As a concerned pet parent, you may be wondering: ‘is calendula safe for dogs and cats?’ Well, don’t you worry because the NHV team is here to help answer this question and more!
What is Calendula?
Calendula officinalis, is a bright yellow, orange, or red-orange flowering plant native to Europe and Africa. It is one of the most cultivated flowers around the world and can be seen in gardens and landscape designs across the globe. Over thirty varieties of calendula exist so be careful not to confuse this flower with the French marigold or other members of the sunflower family. The flower petals are most commonly used for creating water or oil infusions, tinctures, salves, ointments, and more.
History of Calendula
Calendula officinalis gets its name from the Roman word calends – meaning the first day of the month since it was believed that this plant bloomed on the new moon of every month. While this flower may not conform to such a strict schedule, calendula does remain in a state of bloom throughout the majority of its annual lifespan.
Medicinal Properties of Calendula officinalis
C. officinalis was used in early Indian and Arabic cultures, in ancient Greece and Rome. It was used for therapeutic reasons, and as a natural dye in clothing, food, and cosmetics. Traditionally, this healing flower has been used for minor cuts, scrapes, inflammatory dermatitis, flea bites, poison ivy, eczema, sunburn, ringworm, and burns.
When applied topically, calendula helps to relieve discomfort and helps to reduce swelling quickly. Its range of essential oils, flavonoids, saponins, and other compounds helps to decrease bacteria and fungus at the site of injury and helps promote faster healing.
How To Use Calendula Safely For Pets
They are non-toxic and offer a range of natural benefits for your furkiddos!
To answer the question: ‘is calendula safe for dogs and cats?’ It is! Calendula officinalis is a non-toxic plant to have in your garden and may offer a range of natural benefits for your furkiddos! But like anything in life, too much of a good thing can still be too much. This herb is safe for pets when it is formulated to be at a safe dosage for your pet. Don’t forget that you can always consult your veterinarian for proper supervision and dosage information.
Calendula in NHV Products
Overall, calendula is a great herb to help with minor cuts, scrapes, insect bites, and irritated skin. Since marigold has so many great properties, it is used in several NHV products. These include First Aid Spray, Ouch Away Spray, and All-Clear Ointment.
First Aid Spray is our all-natural antiseptic spray that is helpful for cleaning wounds and helping to soothe insect bites. This holistic formulation also contains infection-fighting ingredients to help disinfect the skin, help soothe discomfort, and encourage healing.
Ouch Away Spray is specifically for pets that are prone to itchy skin, fur loss, dermatitis, and yeast infections. It uses calendula along with other herbs to help stop the itch, help eliminate bacteria and fungus at the site of injury and encourage fur regrowth. This all-natural spray is safe if your pet licks it but for best results, we recommend wrapping the area to prevent further irritation.
All-Clear Ointment is an all-natural balm to help protect and soothe skin while promoting healing. This formulation is beneficial for pets with yeast infections, fungal infections, itchy skin, and everyday scuffs. This all-natural formula is safe if your pet licks it and is gentle enough for everyday use.

Dog Paw Pad Ointment for Burn Support
Paw pad injuries due to over-exercise are common injuries for active pups, especially on hot summer days. Running back and forth on rough surfaces like concrete, pavement, or gravel may cause tenderness, blisters, burns, and possible peeling in the pad skin. As a rule of thumb, if the surface is too hot to put the back of your hand onto it, then it isn't safe for your little one to be walking on it either. Dog paw pads are pretty tough, but they aren't meant for running on such hard surfaces for long periods of time. Don't feel bad if your fluffy friend has a paw pad injury and you didn’t notice right away because there may not be any symptoms until they are settling down at home later. Just like summer, winter can present some risks as well. It is easy for your pup's paw pads to get dehydrated, dry or cracked with dry, cold weather. The iconic blue/green salt that is sprinkled onto sideways and walkways can definitely cause ouchies in your furkiddo's paws. To avoid paw pad injuries, consider protective accessories like booties or shoes for your furbaby. Shorter walks, limiting time on hot surfaces and using a topical ointment for dog paws are other ways to prevent paw pad injuries.
How NHV’s Dog Paw Ointment Supports Paw Pad Injuries and More
Paw pad injuries can be minor scratches but sometimes the pads are so badly damaged that the surface of the skin begins to blister and peel away from the foot. These injuries can take quite a while to heal and cause a lot of pain and discomfort for your furkiddo. For more severe injuries, vet-prescribed antibiotics may be required. For less severe burns and scrapes, a topical ointment for dog paws like NHV Heal Care can help soothe inflamed skin and help decrease the risk of infection - your pup's paws aren't always the cleanest so they can be at a higher risk for a bacterial or fungal (yeast) infection.
Heal care for dogs contains ingredients like Arnica and St. John's Wort which are beneficial for a variety of issues from burnt paw pads to achy joints. Arnica is known for its ability to help sprains and joint discomfort by dilating blood vessels, increasing circulation to the affected area and enhancing recovery. St. John’s Wort is a cooling herb that has traditionally been used for reducing inflammation and promoting healing from injuries such as burns, bruises, sores, cramps, sprains and discomfort caused by nerve damage.

Natural Support for Dermatitis, Mange and Skin Infections
Your pup's skin is their largest organ! And because of this, their skin is constantly susceptible to infection, airborne irritants, icky biting insects and much more. Your furkiddo will scratch and bite when they are feeling stressed and have ouchies on their body. This obsessive behavior can introduce unwanted bacteria, whether it is from the environment or your pup’s own body, which can lead to infection. An itchy, inflamed ‘dog hot spot’ can be the end result. If these dog hot spots are left untreated, they can progress to secondary skin infections, abscesses or even metastatic tumors (eg. carcinoma). Ouch Away spray, dog skin infection spray, helps heal inflamed, itchy skin and promotes hair regrowth.
How NHV's Dog Skin Infection Spray Relieves Irritated Skin
Since your pup’s skin is their largest organ, it probably doesn't surprise you that skin issues are the most common health concern in dogs. These include (but are not limited to) dermatitis, mange and skin infections.
Dermatitis in dogs is a hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to a variety of common and typically harmless environmental substances. These allergens include grasses, pollens, house dust mites, or mold spores. Breeds predisposed to developing allergies include Chinese Shar-Peis, Wire Fox Terriers, Golden Retrievers, Dalmatians, Boxers, Boston Terriers, Labrador Retrievers, Lhasa Apsos, Scottish Terriers, Shih Tzus, and West Highland White Terriers. However, any breed (purebred or mixed) can be susceptible to allergies. The areas most affected are generally the paws, face, ears, front legs, and abdomen, but scratching all over the body is fairly common too. Ouch Away Spray for dog skin infections, contains ingredients like Chamomile, Marigold and Aloe vera that cools and soothes wounds, burns and irritated skin while strengthening the immune system.
The most common signs of dermatitis in dogs are:
- Overall itchiness
- Greasy and/or red skin
- Possible foul odor and/or smelly discharge
- Scaly, crusty, and/or flaky skin
- Thickened skin, aka 'elephant skin'
- Darkly pigmented skin (hyperpigmentation)
- Chronic or recurring ear infections
Dog mange is caused by mites and can lead to inflamed skin and nasty sores. Scabies or sarcoptic mange is contagious and is transmissible to humans. Black mange is not transmissible to humans due to it being a genetic condition. Secondary bacterial and yeast infections may develop if left untreated while sores on the skin can build up and release a powerful musty odor. You can learn more about mange and how to help your dog if they are suffering from it in Dr. Cook's article on mange. Ingredients like Rosemary, Tea Tree oil and Lemongrass oil, within the Ouch Away Spray, are effective topically against external parasites, combating skin infections and helping to stimulate fur regrowth (from constant biting and scratching).
