Keep Your Kitten Healthy

You’ve just brought home a gorgeous, playful little fluffball, and of course, you’ve instantly fallen madly in love. If you’re like most kitty lovers, you’re probably already wondering about the best ways to keep that fuzzy little cutie healthy for as many years as possible. Most veterinarians will agree that kittens are more fragile than they seem, making it extremely important to pay particularly close attention to your pet’s health within his or her first weeks at your home. Today, we’re going to answer some of the most common kitten health questions to help you make the most out of those special first days together.

Q. When should I take my kitten for his or her first vet appointment?

A. Generally speaking, kittens should visit a veterinarian within 24 hours of being adopted. This visit will give you a good baseline of your new pet’s health, making it easier to spot new problems should they arise.

Q. What are the most common health problems experienced by young kittens?

A. Common kitty health problems run from mild to severe. Most common among young kittens are dehydration, hypothermia, and low blood sugar. To avoid these problems, make sure that your kitten is well fed and kept warm. Young kittens don’t have teeth, and as such, they can’t yet chew dry food. Make sure young kittens get plenty of canned food until their teeth fully grow in.

Q. Which other common health problems may arise as my kitten grows up?

A. This can be a confusing topic, with time playing a large role in diagnosis. Testing for abnormalities and disease closer to birth will register antibodies received from the kitten’s mother. These antibodies may or may not lead to a full-blown infection or disease later in life. Generally, around 6 months of age, your kitten will be free of these antibodies, making testing easier. Some of the most common diseases a vet will look for will include feline leukemia, fleas/ticks, and any number of parasites.

Q. When should my kitten begin vaccinations?

A. The vaccination process begins early, starting at approximately 8 weeks old. The reason is that the kitten’s natural immunity from its mother begins to wear off at about this age.

Q. Which natural pet supplements can I give my kitten to support his or her health?

A. NHV Natural Pet Products has several proprietary formulations specifically designed to rid your kitten of pests and support immune health naturally. The formulas best recommended for kittens include:
