How to Help Your Dog with Neurological Disorders Naturally

Pet Care Tips 3 min read
Woman kissing a dog on the head in front of sunny windows. How to help your dog with neurological disorders naturally

Neurological disorders are not unique to humans. Dogs and other animals can also have these disorders. To help you support your dog with a neurological disorder diagnosis, here is how to help your dog with neurological disorders naturally.

The causes of neurological disease in dogs are remarkably diverse. Some canine neurological disorders can be associated with genetic factors, parasites, toxic agents, tumors, etc. However, even with the evolution of animal medicine, some of the causes of neurological disorders are unknown.

Common Canine Neurological Diseases

Some of the most common neurological diseases in dogs are:

  • Epilepsy is marked by seizures. Canine epilepsy can be hereditary or acquired.
  • Degenerative disc disease, which is a problem that affects the intervertebral disc.
  • Spondylosis is characterized by the formation of osteophytes (bony spurs) that can bridge one vertebra to another. It is
  • commonly thought of as arthritis of the spine. However, unlike arthritis, this is a noninflammatory condition.
  • Cerebrovascular Accident, popularly called a stroke.
  • Canine distemper a viral disease that affects dogs, regardless of race or age.
  • Congenital anomalies such as hydrocephalus is a disease where the dog has an excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid affecting only one or both sides of the brain.

Some breeds of dogs are more prone to have neurological disorders such as Pugs, Yorkshire, Maltese, and Pinschers.

There are many other diseases that can affect the neurological system in dogs, such as infections, inflammatory, and autoimmune diseases which can trigger neurological signals.

Some breeds of dogs are more prone to have neurological disorders such as Pugs, Yorkshire, Maltese, and Pinschers. They all have in common a small characteristic size and are categorized as Toy dogs.

Seizures, walking in circles, head tilting, and behavior changes such as aggressiveness, depression, or apathy are some of the symptoms that indicate neurological problems.

There are many diagnostic tests that can identify if the pet has a neurological disease. For example, computed tomography, MRI, x-rays, etc. However, only a veterinarian, generally a neurologist, can give an accurate diagnosis of the pathology (disease) that is affecting a pet’s brain or nerves. For this reason, as soon as you observe any unusual behavior in your pet or signs that his/her health is not very well, it is essential to seek the help of a veterinarian.

My 6 year old 3.5lb. Yorkie was given a dose of Revolt (Selemectin) and suffered a horrible adverse response. What was supposed to be a preventative measure has turned out world into a living nightmare. She suffered seizures and while we now have those under control with medication, she is suffering with neurological issues as well. She walks in circles constantly and has problems with her balance. 8. Jodi Hodges says:

My 20 month old 7 lbs Chihuahua suddenly started tilting his head and then had paralysis of front left leg. After X-rays and CT scan, that ruled out malformation or bulging disc, vet diagnosed Autoimmune Encephalitis. He is on [vet-prescribed pharmaceuticals]. He is doing much better, but not himself after 2 weeks of treatment. What can I do to support him?

    1. Team NHV says:

      Hi Jodi,

Thank you for your question. We’re sorry to hear that your Chihuahua isn’t feeling quite like his regular self. He’s definitely been through a lot, but it sounds like you are taking great care of him ❤️

We’ve chatted with our in-house vet and she suggested that Yucca and Turmeric may be helpful for him. Both Yucca and Turmeric have anti-inflammatory properties and promote repair. Yucca especially may be helpful as it has it has properties similar to what you are using.

Our supplements will work well with his vet-prescribed meds, but we recommend to space them apart by half an hour.

We hope this helps! If you have any further questions, please let us know! We are here for you and your little one
