Are you feeling under the weather and worried that your little furry friend will catch a cold from you? Or vice versa? Look no further. This article explores how colds in dogs and humans are different, and whether or not you can transmit colds to your fur kiddo.
Similarities and Differences between Colds in Dogs and Humans
The symptoms of colds in dogs and humans may look alike. You might see sneezing, runny noses, and coughing, just like in human colds. However, when dogs show these symptoms, there is generally much more cause for concern.
The common cold in humans is usually caused by rhinovirus, but other viruses can also cause it, including coronavirus, influenza, and parainfluenza. Unlike in humans, canine adenoviruses, canine parainfluenza virus, and Bordetella bronchiseptica are viruses and bacteria that can cause cold or flu-like symptoms in our furry friends.

These viruses are totally different strains from each other and need specific receptors in the host body to become infected, so it is almost impossible for dogs with canine parainfluenza virus to transmit this virus to their owner and vice versa. So don’t worry, even if you have a cold, you can always give your furry friend a big hug.
Precautions to Take When Your Dog is Sick
When your little one shows signs of mild sneezing and running nose, it can usually get better on its own in a week. However, if these symptoms get worse and persist longer than that, or the dog starts to show signs of losing appetite or lethargy, seeing a veterinarian is recommended for examination and diagnosis, as there might be a serious disease going on.
What about other diseases? Can our furry friends transmit it to us? Yes, they can potentially transmit diseases to us. Diseases such as Lyme disease, giardiasis, and Leptospirosis can be transmitted from dogs to humans. However, you can reduce the risk by practicing good hygiene, such as using a glove or washing your hands after handling your dog’s waste and ensuring your dog’s health is well taken care of. Remember to bring them for regular veterinarian check-ups and make sure that your dog’s vaccination schedule is up to date, especially if they spend time around other furry friends to prevent diseases like canine influenza, distemper, and kennel cough.
Also, don’t forget to feed them nutritious foods to help support their immune system. Foods like strawberries, blueberries, spinach, carrots, and kale can be tasty additions to their meals or special treats!
