Halloween Fun for Pets

Halloween isn’t just for people; pets can have their share of fun too. Some pets might be real tricksters, while others might not, but we do know one thing for sure: all pets are good at the treat part!

Here is a list of our top 10 ideas to help your pet get in on some Halloween fun this year.

Go pumpkin picking. It’s a great way to get your pumpkin, spend quality time together and get exercise.

Get dressed up. This might not be fun for every pet, but some pets don’t mind or even like wearing little sweaters and jackets, so why not try a costume? Everyone will think they are adorable, earning them all the attention they could ever want. Just remember to make sure that costumes fit properly and do not put your pet at any risk of injury.

Go trick or treating. Including your dog when you go trick or treating is a great way to get exercise and ensure that they are not left home alone with the goblins and ghosts floating around. Make sure they are on a leash and never leave them alone in the car– let’s face it, you would be scared too if you were left in a glass bubble in the dark with monsters everywhere!

Why not teach your cat or dog a few new tricks this Halloween?

Be tricksters. Why not teach your cat or dog a few new tricks this Halloween? It’s a great way to earn some tasty homemade cat or dog ghost cookies they smelled baking too! Why would you go trick OR treating when you can be trick AND treating! (sorry we couldn’t resist).

Forget the tricks and skip straight to the treats. With everyone else walking around collecting pumpkins and pillowcases full of treats, make sure your furry friend does not feel left out. Bake some homemade dog or cat treats in spooky Halloween shapes and let them get in on the fun.

Treats for your little werewolf or your spooky black cat:

10 oz canned salmon or tuna (undrained)

1 egg (beaten)

10 blueberries (fresh)

2 cups whole wheat flour

Instructions:

Heat oven to 350°F. With a hand mixer, blend salmon (undrained), egg (beaten), blueberries, and whole wheat flour until dough forms. If the dough is too dry, gradually add more water. If the dough is too wet or sticky, gradually add a bit more flour. Dough should be slightly tacky but not sticky.

Roll dough out on a floured surface to approximately ¼” thick. Use a small ¾” cookie cutter or cut into spooky-shaped treats. Place treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for approximately 20 minutes or until treats are slightly browned.

Carve Jack O’Lanterns and share the gold. Many people love roasting the pumpkin seeds for a treat on Halloween, so make sure to include your pet in this indulgence. Just scoop out a bit of extra pumpkin meat, give it a quick roast, then cool it and feed it to your furry friend. They are sure to love it. Pumpkin also provides the bonus of helping to balance the digestive tract!

Have a party. Many areas have local Halloween-themed pet parties. See if there is one in your area. Your cat or dog will be happy to see their friends and may even make a new friend.

Play a game. Stash a few homemade treats in easy-to-find areas of the house and let your cat or dog feel like the hunting champion they already think they are.

Turn chores into playtime. Raking leaves can be a dreaded task for us humans, but all our pets see is a giant pile of awesomeness! Once you have started a pile of leaves (removing any twigs and other objects that could cause injury), invite your cat or dog outside to run through and jump into the pile. This may cause a bit more work for you in the long run, but if your pet is anything like ours, the excitement for them and the entertainment will be more than worth it.

Get spooky with the supernatural. Ever wondered what your cat or dog is thinking? This Halloween, book an animal communication session to find out what they have been trying to tell you. It might not exactly be supernatural, but it is a pretty special ability.

As much as the above list can help your pet to have fun, please do not forget about the big picture. Having strange people in costumes constantly showing up at your door, the doorbell ringing, kids screaming, candy wrappers ruffling, and often fireworks can be very overwhelming. Some pets will do better just being left alone to hide in peace. Those pets that are not as eager to partake in the Halloween fun ensure that they are safe and out of danger from others and themselves.
