#1 – A Dog’s Ear Has 18 Muscles

Have you ever wondered how your pup tilts their ears in those cute, quirky directions? It is all thanks to an impressive muscle network. While humans have just six ear muscles, dogs have at least 18 working in each ear flap. This lets them rotate and tilt their ears independently, helping to pinpoint sound.

Did you know? All puppies are actually born deaf! Their ear canals only open around two to three weeks of age, giving them hearing roughly four times sharper than ours.

Left-pawed or ambilateral (no preference) pups are sometimes more reactive to new or unusual situations!

While your fur kid can’t exactly read a clock or tell you it’s a quarter to noon, they do have the ability to sense the progression of time.

If you have ever noticed your pet waiting for food at the right time, you’ve seen this internal clock at work. Pets rely on a combination of circadian rhythms, environmental cues, and scent decay to track time throughout the day.

What is scent decay? Here’s an example: when you leave the house, your personal scent is strong. As the hours pass, your scent gradually fades in the air. Dogs can actually learn to gauge how long you have been gone based on how much your scent has decayed (or dissipated) over time.
