How To Make Our Natural Pet Supplements Work Better?

A holistic approach to your pet’s health has precious rewards. Besides boosting your pet’s natural ability to fight disease, it also helps save your pet from the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs. It helps keep your fur kid healthier, for longer, naturally.

Introducing your dog or cat to herbs is a simple yet consistent effort.

Animals love the natural route, by the way. Much before kibble and pills, herbal remedies still existed for mankind and its furry companions. If you’ve ever seen your pet chomping grass, you know what we’re talking about. But a holistic approach also has some rules. Introducing your dog or cat to herbs is a simple yet consistent effort.

For instance, expecting herbs to work like instant-relief pills is incorrect. You have to be patient and wait for them to kick in. In some pets this might take 2-3 days, in others, it might take up to 2-3 weeks. Similarly, adding kitchen turmeric to Fido’s food won’t do him any good. Turmeric alone is not bioavailable to animals.  You see, there’s a science to it. Based on that science, we’ve put together some advice for holistic pet parents that can help them make these natural supplements and remedies work better for their pets.

Dosage

Our natural pet supplements have two kinds of dosages – a maintenance dosage and a therapeutic dosage.

Maintenance dosage is to be administered to a healthy pet who is taking the supplements as a preventative or a precaution. (For example, a pet taking Turmeric for the long term as general well-being support.)

If a pet has been diagnosed with a health condition then it is the therapeutic dose that will apply. (For example, a pet taking Es Clear to help against cancer.)

All our oral supplements follow the weight charts mentioned below except our fish oil blend called the Pet Omega3 which has its own dosage instructions clearly mentioned on the bottle and on the website.

Therapeutic Pet’s Weight Dosage – to be taken two times per day

0 – 15 lb = 0.5 ml | 16 – 30 lb = 1.0 ml | 31 – 45 lb = 1.5 ml | 46 – 60 lb = 2.0 ml | 61 – 75 lb = 2.5 ml | Over 75lb= 3.0 ml

Maintenance Pet’s Weight Dosage – to be taken two times per day

0 – 24 lb = 0.5 ml | 25 – 49 lb = 1.0 ml | 50 – 74 lb = 1.5 ml | +75 lb = 2.0 ml

Dosage for kittens, and smaller pets like ferrets:

When giving our natural supplements to smaller animals like ferrets, mice, hamsters, bunnies, rabbits and even birds or iguanas, you have to follow the simple rule of giving 1 drop for every 2 lbs of body weight, twice a day. The same dosage applies to a kitten, i.e. a cat under 8 months of age.

Dosage for puppies and for pets with sensitive tummies:

When administering our natural pet supplements to a puppy or to a pet who is showing signs of a sensitive stomach, you’d want to start with a lower dose and slowly work your way up to the required dosage. You could do it over a period of one week or 3-4 days, depending upon how well your pet is responding to the herbs.

Administering

There are four thumb rules when it comes to giving natural supplements. These are really the same for humans and furkids.

Rule number 1. Try to give the supplements at the same time every day
Preferably an 8-12 hours gap. This ensures that the supplements blend in with the body’s natural clock and every day at the same time the body is ready to work with the herbs, naturally.

Rule number 2. Give the dosage when the stomach is full
Giving them on an empty stomach can give them soft stools. Make sure your pet has something in the tummy besides the supplements. Mixing the herbal blends into their food is the simplest way to ensure this. But if you have a picky eater, give the dosage directly in their mouths, after they have eaten breakfast or dinner. (NHV Mellit is an exception as it is given to diabetic pets and is best given 15-20 minutes before their main meals.)

Rule Number 3. Keep a 30 minutes gap between regular medicines and our natural pet supplements
Our herbal blends have been specially formulated to work in conjunction with pharmaceutical medicines and conventional drugs. However, it is best to keep a 30 minutes gap between their dosages. This way both get the chance to do their work without being interrupted by the other.

Rule Number 4. Stay consistent and don’t miss a dose
Our natural pet supplements are gentle. They might take some time to show their full effect. Skipping a dose means much of the herbal hard work gets undone. We suggest maintaining a log and placing alerts on your phone. To ensure you are giving the right dosage, at the right time every day.

There are various ways of giving our supplements and remedies to your pet

1. Mix them in their favorite treat or main meal

Simply mix the supplements in their main meal or their favorite treat like biscuits, yogurt, cats love their water-brined no sodium tuna, and dogs love their boiled chicken or any other things your furkids love. Just make sure they eat all of their food as you don’t want them missing out on their dose by leaving leftovers in the bowl. You could also mix them in yogurt, pureed pumpkin or honey, or goat’s milk and place them in a separate bowl for them to lap it up as a snack.

2. Drop in their mouth after they have eaten their meals.

You could use our dropper directly. Many dogs and cats love taking our supplements like that as they are glycerine-based and have a sweet taste. The herbs kick in the quickest when administered directly.

3. When giving more than one, mix them and place in a plastic syringe. Squirt them in directly

When giving multiple NHV Pet Supplements, pour out the required dosage in a bowl. Suck the final mix into a plastic syringe and squirt it into their mouth gently, all at once, after they have eaten something.

4. Give them a treat afterwards

Just like you train them to sit, stop, heel, and shake hands with little treats as rewards, reward them for eating their supplements. Let them understand that every time they finish taking the supplements, they will get a lovely treat afterward.

Diet

We always suggest a homemade wet-food diet for pets undergoing treatment for a health condition. Even otherwise, some amount of wet food is important for cats and dogs. It brings in some much-needed moisture and is easier for their system to digest. Here are some suggestions our pet experts put together. These have been made assuming your pet isn’t allergic to these ingredients, you can always make any necessary tweaks.

1. To stimulate appetite

Try a 2:1 ratio of skinless boiled, boneless chicken to skinless boiled sweet potatoes served at a warm temperature. Boil the chicken and sweet potato together in the same pot. Mix the ingredients together so it has the consistency of chunky soup and can be easily consumed.

2. Healthy balanced diet

Here’s a recipe that we love. It’s great for dogs and cats. This specific recipe is more of a “topper” – meaning we use it over their regular high-quality canned food to give them extra nutrients. Here’s a video of us giving this yummy healthy mix with cat tuna to our kitties, Jonika and Zimba.

3. Post surgery diet

The best food to give to a pet recovering from surgery is a simple 2:1 mix of boiled, boneless, skinless chicken with white steamed rice. Make it a little mushy, easy to swallow. You could also give chicken broth made the good ‘ol homemade way. Put some boiled egg or boiled chicken pieces (boneless, of course) in the broth.

Holistic approach:

Holistic in simpler terms means treating the whole body. It’s never just one organ in the body that’s affected by the disease, the whole body takes the toll. Thus, a holistic approach takes into account your pet’s vitals, like the liver, the kidneys and the heart, and the affected body part. With time, especially when fighting a progressive disease like cancer or Cushing’s, the fight will also need to be upped. The same dosage might not work throughout. There might also be subtractions and additions to the holistic NHV regime being followed. We appreciate parents who come back to us with updates and allow us to give our best to their furkids.
