Is Slippery Elm Safe for Pets?

Herbs For Pets 2 min read
Rich results for Google SERP when searching is slippery elm safe for pets?

You may have been hearing about the many health benefits of slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) for humans, but you may be wondering ‘is slippery elm safe for pets’ too? If so, how do I use it safely? Well, you’re in luck because we are here to answer these important questions for you!

What is Slippery Elm?

Slippery elm is a type of deciduous tree native to the eastern United States and Canada. It is especially common in the Appalachian mountains. Slippery elm trees thrive in dry soil at high altitudes, reaching heights upwards of 80 feet tall. The outer bark is thick, grooved, and is pinkish-brown in color. The inner bark of the branches and trunk are what is typically used for medicinal purposes.

Slippery elm is a highly nutritious herb that also helps to protect and lubricate, soothe and gently detoxify the body.

Medicinal Properties of Slippery Elm

Native Americans traditionally used slippery elm for any health concern involving the digestive tract, respiratory tract, or skin. Slippery elm is an emollient (softens and lubricates) that also works as a demulcent (soothes), and a gentle laxative. When food was scarce, Indigenous peoples in the Appalachian mountains would rely on slippery elm as a food source because of its high levels of vitamins (A, B complex, C, K), calcium, magnesium, and sodium.

Its anti-inflammatory properties help to draw out harmful toxins by soothing and lubricating the throat, stomach, and digestive tract. Slippery elm’s restorative and laxative qualities are especially helpful for gastritis, pharyngitis, colitis, duodenal ulcers, and diarrhea.
