Vet Talks: Integrative Care For Cancer in Pets

In our veterinary clinic, one of the most common and unfortunate cases we’ve presented with is cancer in pets. As an integrative veterinary practice, the owners who see us are seeking help with how to improve quality of life, extend life with holistic therapies, or ease chemotherapy side effects. Diet, supplements, acupuncture, physical therapy, and other complementary modalities greatly improve quality of life, ease discomfort and help to increase the life span of our pet cancer patients.

Approximately one-third of all tumors in dogs are skin tumors, and up to twenty percent of those are mast cell tumors.

Cancer shortens the lives of nearly half of all dogs and cats in the U.S. Cancer in pets occurs when the body’s immune system cannot stop cells from replicating at an abnormally fast, disorderly pace and forming a mass known as a tumor. Sadly, just as in humans, cancer in our pets is not caused by any single factor. While genetics and environmental factors can play a role in the disease’s development, other variables such as toxins, radiation, and tumor viruses, as well as hormones can also be responsible for causing several types of cancer. Suppressed or deficient immune systems can also increase an animal’s risk of developing cancer.

Approximately one-third of all tumors in dogs are skin tumors, and up to twenty percent of those are mast cell tumors. The most common location to find mast cells is in the skin, followed by the spleen, liver, and bone marrow. Tumors and cancer are also found in mammary glands, mouth, lymph nodes, abdomen, and bone; unfortunately, cancer can be anywhere in the body.

Our goals in treating cancer include helping to fight the disease itself, as well as strengthening the immune system, dispel side effects of chemotherapy, alleviate discomfort, and improve quality of life. We recommend antioxidants, high levels of high-quality omega 3 fatty acids such as NHV PetOmega-3, inhibiting metastasis with curcumin (like NHV Turmeric), bromelain, astragalus, resveratrol, medicinal mushrooms. We also recommend low carbohydrate, moderate to high fat, and moderate protein diet. Vitamin A, C, D3, E, and selenium may inhibit tumor growth. Other herbs such as garlic, ginseng, green tea, have been proven to be useful in helping slow the progression of cancer growth.

When a specific cancer diagnosis has been made, herbal and diet protocols are made specific to cancer. We often prescribe NHV Milk Thistle for detoxing and liver support, NHV ES clear for overall cancer and immune support, and NHV BK Detox to help flush toxins from the body’s system.

Diagnosis of cancer is often surprising and shocking. Know that there are things to help your beloved one to help ease with the disease and provide comfort and an increased life span. We see this over and over again in our practice. If you have any questions regarding your pet health, click on the button below to chat with an NHV pet expert.

  1. Bette says:

*How in the world are you suppose to get all these things into a finicky cat with CA???

    1. NHV Natural Pet Products says:

      Hi Bette,
Thank you for your comment inquiry. All of our NHV supplements are in liquid form, which not only assimilates into the bloodstream faster than tablets or capsules, but it also makes it easier to administer. The supplements are in a glycerin base, which gives them a slightly sweet flavour that most cats do not mind. They can be given directly into your kitty’s mouth or can easily be hidden in their wet food, soaked into a favorite treat, or mixed into a tsp of yoghurt or pumpkin. NHV supplements have been designed to be safe to use together, so they can even be administered all at the same time for convenience!

  2. Jess says:

My cat just started interferon. Can he have these supplements in addition to that?

    1. NHV Natural Pet Products says:

      Hi Jess,
Thank you for your question. Our resources do not show any negative interactions between any of our NHV cancer related products and Interferon, so they should be safe to use together. We do always recommend consulting with your vet to ensure that they are aware of any supplements you are administering to your kitty in addition to the medications they are prescribing. All of our NHV supplements have also been designed to be safe to use together and can be administered at the same time for convenience.

  3. Hello Ashton,

Thank you for your message. We apologize for the delayed reply. We are very sorry to hear about your furry friend’s diagnosis.

For this particular condition we would suggest using the Pet Cancer Super Support Kit for your furry friend. This kit contains ES Clear, Milk Thistle and Turmeric. ES Clear contains herbs that help with the fight against cancer. ES Clear purifies the blood and also detoxifies the vital organs. It will also strengthen the immune system, increase energy levels and promote digestion which will then lead to improved appetite.

Milk Thistle will help detoxify the vital organs and helps with the regeneration of damaged organs especially the liver and kidneys. It will also help in improving the function of the liver and kidneys and also helps to improve overall health and vitality.

Turmeric helps improve overall cardiovascular health with a particular emphasis on heart health, arthritis and also has anti cancerogenic properties.
To help address the overall pain and discomfort of the tumors and the pulled muscles, we would suggest using Yucca. Yucca has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that will help reduce the pain and inflammation that may be present and also will also have the added effect of boosting the appetite.

Collectively when these products are used together they are very beneficial for the support against cancer. Please note that these are herbal supplements and may take some time show a visible effect on your furry friend. Some pet parents have noticed a difference in their pet after a few days while others notice difference after around 2 weeks.

Please note that our supplements are all natural and do not contain any preservatives, so they require refrigeration once opened and will last 6 months in the fridge. Please also note that we have 2 dosages: The maintenance dosage used to maintain health, which is on the bottle (1 drop per 2 lbs of weight, twice per day) and a therapeutic dosage used to address a condition, which is outlined in the table below. We would suggest using the therapeutic dosage when addressing this condition.

Therapeutic Pet’s Weight Dosage– to be taken two times per day
    0 – 24 lb = 0.5 mL
    25 – 49 lb = 1.0 mL
    50 – 74 lb = 1.5 mL
    Over 75 lb = 2.0 mL

We would suggest administering the supplements with food or with your furry friend’s favorite treat for convenience. Alternatively you may wish to administer the product via a syringe or dropper directly into the mouth preferably after feeding so that the product is easier on the digestive system. Please note that all of the suggested supplements may be administered together and at the same time.

I hope that you find this information helpful and if you have any questions about the supplements or dosages, please do not hesitate to contact us, we are always happy to help!

  4. Tanya says:

Hi my dog was diagnosed with large cell lymphoma she has both an enlarged spleen and liver and won’t eat.. we just put her on cbd oil can she take these supplements with that..

    1. Raphael M says:

      Hi Tanya,

We’re so sorry to hear this.

Yes, she can take the supplements along with other medicine, such as prescribed medication. She would need to take them twice a day, with food.
Please let us know if you have any other questions so we can help.

      Yours in wellness,
      NHV Team
