Outdoor Adventures With Fur Kids: Packing for Hikes with Pets

Pet Care Tips 4 min read

The stunning views, photo ops, and sense of accomplishment from going on a hike are all the sweeter when your furry best friend can be there. You may have the trail mix, bear bell, and first aid ready to go, but is your fur kid just as prepared for your next outing? They might require more prep to bring along than you’d think! These are our must-haves when packing for hikes with pets.

The Basics

First things first, you’ve got to bring gear that keeps your pup safe – and attached to you. A harness is always better than a standard collar for hiking. They distribute pressure evenly across the chest, which is helpful if your fur kid needs a quick tug to avoid a sharp rock, slippery patch, or other hazard.

You also need a good, sturdy leash. Certain parks have specific regulations about the type of leash, so always do a bit of research before heading out. Even if they don’t, a leash is incredibly important. It keeps your fur kiddo from wandering into thick brush where hidden dangers might be waiting.

And finally, do not forget a pile of poop bags. Keeping the trails clean for everyone to enjoy is a big part of being a responsible pet parent. Tip: Some harnesses have pouches so that your fur kid can help carry a bit of the load!

Pest Control on the Trails with NHV Target Spray

Nature is the home of many pests, like ticks and fleas. These tiny troublemakers love nothing more than hitching a ride on a warm passing mammal, like your dog.

That’s why we always pack NHV Target Spray in our go bags. It’s an additional layer of protection with aromatic oils such as lemongrass oil that may help deter bugs. Just spray it on their coat before you hit the path, paying extra attention to their legs and belly. Don’t let them

The “Just in Case” Supplies

Accidents happen, even on easy trails. A sharp rock can scrape a paw pad, or a thorny bush can leave a nasty scratch. Being far away from your car without supplies is a scary feeling, so a pet-specific first aid kit is a must.

Your basic pack should include pet-safe antiseptic wipes, gauze, medical tape, and tweezers for removing splinters or ticks. It’s also not a bad idea to pack a pair of emergency booties. If your pup injures a paw, the bootie will cushion and protect the wound and help them walk back down more comfortably.

And finally, always do your research. Not all trails are suitable for fur kids, and not all fur kids are suited to the trails.

Boost Your Kit with the NHV Cut & Wound Care Kit

To really elevate your trail first aid game, add the NHV Cut & Wound Care Kit to your backpack. This helpful duo combines two topical remedies for unexpected scrapes. They’re also easy to throw into your first aid kit for natural support on the go.

The kit includes All Clear ointment and First Aid spray. Together, they use soothing natural herbs to clean minor cuts, calm irritated skin, and encourage faster healing. The spray is super easy to apply right on the trail. Follow it up with a dab of the ointment to protect the area. It is a must-have for any active pet parent’s backpack.

Remember to Hydrate and Refuel

In a way, your fur kid works twice as hard as you do on a hike. They are taking quick, frequent steps and constantly sniffing everything, of course! They need regular water breaks to stay cool and prevent overheating, especially since dogs can only sweat through their paws and by panting.

You will want to bring extra water just for them or have a way to sanitize the water. The lakes and streams can have bacteria that their systems aren’t used to, and it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to taking a gamble on water sources in the wild. A good rule of thumb is to offer water every twenty to thirty minutes, even if they do not seem thirsty, and always redirect them away from stagnant water sources.

The Perfect NHV Treats for the Trails

Just like you need your trail mix, your fur kid needs a high-quality energy boost during a long trek. Packing the right snacks keeps their stamina up and reinforces good behavior when you need them to focus or listen to commands.

Our fave trail snack is a handful of crunchy NHV treats. Options like our Ocean Cod Crunch or Only Beets! are perfect for outdoor adventures. Ocean Cod Crunch is packed with clean protein for their muscles and healthy omega-3 fatty acids that support their joints. Plus, it smells amazing, so you will easily get your dog’s full attention. NHV Only Beets! is a single-ingredient beet treat that offers excellent nutrition for a hike thanks to its heart health benefits

Have Fun!

Hiking with your fur kiddo can be an enriching experience for you both. With the right preparation, the right gear, and a pack full of natural support, you can explore the great outdoors with confidence. So get prepared and then get out there to create new fun memories together!
