Anxiety and stress are not unique to humans – our pets can experience these feelings too. Contrary to common belief, food plays an important role in supporting your little one’s nervous system, along with environmental adjustments and behavioral training. Thus, choosing the right diet can help promote relaxation and support your fur baby’s emotional well-being. In this blog we will explore a little bit how diet, stress, and foods that help calm pets.

How Diet Affects Pet Stress Levels

There is a strong connection between nutrition and mental health

It’s no surprise to us that there is a strong connection between nutrition and mental health. Studies have shown that a healthy diet can give energy and focus, and some nutrients present in our fur babies diet can directly influence their mood and stress levels. For instance, vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids can support some neurotransmitter production, which are responsible to help regulate anxiety and can promote relaxation.

Foods That Help Calm Pets

Here are some important nutrients and foods that should be present in our pet’s diet and they might help to reduce stress:

  • Tryptophan: It can be found in some animal protein such as turkey, chicken, eggs, etc. It may support the production of serotonin, which is an important neurotransmitter involved in with feeling well-being and calm.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: It can be found in fish such as salmon or in supplements like PetOmega 3 from NHV. This supplement may help reduce inflammation and support brain activity, in this way improving mood and relaxation.
  • Vitamin B Complex: It can be present in certain types of proteins, whole grains, and even leafy greens. This important vitamin can support the nervous system and help decrease stress in pets and humans as well.
  • Magnesium: It is found in pumpkin seeds or spinach for example, magnesium has properties that may reduce stress in pets.
  • Herbal Additions: Natural herbs like chamomile or valerian root – found in NHV Lesstress and Matricalm – can help your fur baby to relax.

Foods to Avoid for Pets with Anxiety

There are certain types of foods that can exacerbate anxiety in pets by affecting their nervous system and overall health. Below are some foods that you should not give to your little one.

High-Sugar Foods

As we all know, high-sugar foods are not ideal – not only because they can raise glucose levels and elevate the risk of diabetes, but also because they can cause spikes in energy levels, potentially increasing anxiety. I would recommend avoiding treats and foods with high sugar content to help support your pet’s overall well-being.

Processed Foods

Natural is always better! Foods with preservatives, fillers, or artificial flavors can have negative impact your pet’s mood and behavior. Thus, opting for whole, natural ingredients is always the best.

You can cook your pet homemade stews and recipes, but be sure to consult a vet nutritionist first.

Caffeine

First and foremost, caffeine is toxic to dogs and cats and should never be given to them under any circumstances. Even small amounts of caffeine, found in coffee, tea, or certain sodas, can overstimulate your little one’s nervous system, leading to increased anxiety, hyperactivity, and in severe cases, even death.

Foods with Artificial Additives

Artificial additives, such as colors and preservatives, can pose serious health risks to pets, including contributing to long-term issues like cancer. They can also trigger adverse reactions, such as stress or behavioral changes. To support your pet’s overall well-being, I would recommend steering clear of these substances in their diet.

Fatty or Greasy Foods

Heavy, greasy foods can make pets feel very uncomfortable, potentially contributing to stress or irritability. Additionally, these foods can increase cholesterol, which plays a role in the cortisol production pathway. Elevated cortisol levels are associated with increased stress, so it’s important to be mindful of this when managing your pet’s diet.
