dermatitis relief
Ticks belong to the arachnid family and come in a variety of shapes and sizes- some as small as the head of a pin! But don’t let their scale fool you- these pesky 8 leggers can carry with them a host of dangerous diseases, making them a serious threat to the health of your favorite furry friend. So, of course, the best way to avoid tick bites is to prevent your animal from coming into contact with them in the first place. That’s why today we’re listing our top tips for creating a tick-free outdoor space for your pets, just in time for summer.
1) Trim it Back
Ticks are most commonly found in overgrown areas lacking sunlight. If your yard has an overgrown garden or low-hanging plant life, it’s best to trim it back. Sun and wind provide dry air harsh enough to eradicate a tick population.
2) Tidy it Up
Take the time to remove any old leaf litter or plant debris from the fall at the beginning of the warmer seasons. Old mulch and weeds provide the perfect damp, dark home for ticks to grow.
3) Mow it Down
Shortening your grass lowers the humidity at ground level, making it harder for ticks to survive.
Mow your lawn to a height of 3 inches or less. Shortening your grass lowers the humidity at ground level, making it harder for ticks to survive.
4) Sun it Up
Is there a high-traffic area in your backyard where your pets spend the most time? First, make sure it’s getting enough sunlight. This may mean trimming back some tree branches or moving the area closer to the center of the yard. Add some sun and reduce the chances of ticks sticking around.
5) Give it a Border
Particularly if your yard backs onto a ravine or forested area, it can be helpful to create a border between your yard and the outlying foliage. Pebbles or cedar chips can add enough of a gap to deter ticks from entering the yard.
What about in the woods?
Try as we might prevent a tick population from laying claim to the yard, taking a pet out for a hike or a long walk by the lake can easily present additional opportunities for contact. Before setting out for an outdoor adventure, you can give your animal extra protection with an all-natural pet remedy spray such as NHV’s Target Spray and Ouch Away Spray. These soothing formulas work to naturally deter fleas, ticks, lice, and mosquitoes, as well as their eggs. And if you suspect that your pet has been bitten, both natural pet products will work to calm irritated skin and stop excessive scratching.
With some extra planning and a little bit of elbow grease, you can significantly reduce your pet’s chances of contracting a tick-related disease this summer. Prevention really is the key to avoiding a run-in with one of these nasty little pests. Have your pets ever come in contact with ticks? Have you ever had to remove a tick from your pet’s coat?

Natural Support for Dermatitis, Mange and Skin Infections
Your pup's skin is their largest organ! And because of this, their skin is constantly susceptible to infection, airborne irritants, icky biting insects and much more. Your furkiddo will scratch and bite when they are feeling stressed and have ouchies on their body. This obsessive behavior can introduce unwanted bacteria, whether it is from the environment or your pup’s own body, which can lead to infection. An itchy, inflamed ‘dog hot spot’ can be the end result. If these dog hot spots are left untreated, they can progress to secondary skin infections, abscesses or even metastatic tumors (eg. carcinoma). Ouch Away spray, dog skin infection spray, helps heal inflamed, itchy skin and promotes hair regrowth.
How NHV's Dog Skin Infection Spray Relieves Irritated Skin
Since your pup’s skin is their largest organ, it probably doesn't surprise you that skin issues are the most common health concern in dogs. These include (but are not limited to) dermatitis, mange and skin infections.
Dermatitis in dogs is a hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to a variety of common and typically harmless environmental substances. These allergens include grasses, pollens, house dust mites, or mold spores. Breeds predisposed to developing allergies include Chinese Shar-Peis, Wire Fox Terriers, Golden Retrievers, Dalmatians, Boxers, Boston Terriers, Labrador Retrievers, Lhasa Apsos, Scottish Terriers, Shih Tzus, and West Highland White Terriers. However, any breed (purebred or mixed) can be susceptible to allergies. The areas most affected are generally the paws, face, ears, front legs, and abdomen, but scratching all over the body is fairly common too. Ouch Away Spray for dog skin infections, contains ingredients like Chamomile, Marigold and Aloe vera that cools and soothes wounds, burns and irritated skin while strengthening the immune system.
The most common signs of dermatitis in dogs are:
- Overall itchiness
- Greasy and/or red skin
- Possible foul odor and/or smelly discharge
- Scaly, crusty, and/or flaky skin
- Thickened skin, aka 'elephant skin'
- Darkly pigmented skin (hyperpigmentation)
- Chronic or recurring ear infections
Dog mange is caused by mites and can lead to inflamed skin and nasty sores. Scabies or sarcoptic mange is contagious and is transmissible to humans. Black mange is not transmissible to humans due to it being a genetic condition. Secondary bacterial and yeast infections may develop if left untreated while sores on the skin can build up and release a powerful musty odor. You can learn more about mange and how to help your dog if they are suffering from it in Dr. Cook's article on mange. Ingredients like Rosemary, Tea Tree oil and Lemongrass oil, within the Ouch Away Spray, are effective topically against external parasites, combating skin infections and helping to stimulate fur regrowth (from constant biting and scratching).
