Quite often we get asked: isn’t hydrangea poisonous to dogs and cats? You may have read about it being dangerous for your pet’s health, but is that true? We’re here to set the records straight!

What is Hydrangea?

Also known as Hydrangea arborescens, this plant has over a hundred different cultivars. Its impressive floral clusters grow in woodland and on river banks across China, Japan, the Himalayas, Indonesia, and North and South America. It also naturally grows in the East Coast of the United States of America. The name Hydrangea comes from the Greek words for water (hydor) and jar (angos), referring to its cup-shaped fruits.

History of the Wild Hydrangea Plant

The Cherokee people in North America have used hydrangea root for centuries as a natural remedy for kidney and bladder stones. In terms of herbalism, only the roots are used for liquid extractions and tinctures.

The roots of Hydrangea are safe and very beneficial. But extra caution is needed, as many other parts of the plant can be toxic to dogs and cats if ingested.

Medicinal Properties of Hydrangea arborescens

Hydrangea arborescens root is rich in flavonoids, saponins, volatile oils and other healing compounds that are very beneficial for treating and dissolving kidney and bladder stones. This herb can also help encourage the body to expel these stones. Hydrangea root is also very beneficial for other urinary tract inflammations such as urethritis, cystitis, and prostatitis.
