How Biscotti Overcame Rabbit Paralysis Attacks

Nothing beats bringing home a new friend – whether it’s a cat, dog, or a beautiful bunny! This was true for pet parent Heidi, who cheerfully brought home a new big-eared friend: Biscotti the bunny. Because Biscotti was only 6 months old, Heidi wasn’t anticipating any serious health concerns, so the appearance of sudden and dramatic episodes of rabbit paralysis shook Heidi – especially when there was no helping them at first.

A Mysterious Illness Appears

Biscotti is an Angora rabbit, which is why he looks so fancy! This special breed has distinctive long fur that makes them stand out in the world of bunnies. Angoras also tend to have strong personalities; they are playful, smart, and strong-willed.

In the beginning, Heidi didn’t know that this cutie had any health issues – she was just excited to welcome this new fluffy joy into her home. But suddenly, Biscotti the bunny was getting random bouts of rabbit paralysis.

I adopted my bunny at 6 months without knowing he got paralysis attacks. His hind legs would get completely stiff and stop working. It would happen every couple of weeks for about 2mins and then he’d be back to normal. I took him to the vet, they assumed it was the E. Cuniculi parasite (very common in bunnies) and gave me an 8-week antibiotic treatment. After completing the treatment, my bunny continued getting attacks.

There are a lot of scary things that could lead to temporary episodes of paralysis like this in bunnies. Some suspects include arthritis, spondylosis, infections, or Floppy Bunny Syndrome, but Heidi’s vet was unable to make a diagnosis of this sudden and scary mystery illness. Feeling frustrated but not willing to give up, Heidi did some research and came across NHV.

Taking Matters into Her Own Hands

When pets are plagued by illnesses that don’t have a clear diagnosis, it can be a scary time for pet parents. But after the shock and worry have settled, the love we feel for our fur kiddos impels us to action. In our eyes, this is what makes pet parents everyday heroes!

I started researching natural medicine because, after all, bunnies live in the wild and eat plants… I kept researching and came across this website. I purchased the Milk Thistle and Turmeric tinctures. My bunny loved the taste! And IT WORKED from day 1!

Studies on Milk Thistle suggest that the flavonoids in silymarin (the active ingredient of the herb) contain strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and detoxifying properties it may also promotes cellular regeneration and repair.

Turmeric‘s active compound Curcumin may help improve liver health and supplement extra antioxidant goodness while supporting inflammation. In holistic health, it is often paired with black pepper, like in our formula, for enhanced absorption. It makes a great treatment for arthritis as well.

How Biscotti Bounced Back

To whoever thinks that rabbits don’t have any personality, we say look no further than Biscotti. Although that personality is sometimes a bit mischievous!

Biscotti is still doing very well. He does get attacks here and there BUT I’ve noticed it’s when I forget to give him his NHV supplements for too many days or after he’s eaten something he shouldn’t!

This is a good reminder that the holistic approach to wellness is a marathon, not a race. The things we put into our bodies build heath and wellness over time. But with the loving Heidi by his side, we’re sure Biscotti will continue to thrive.

Discover Herbs for Rabbits

Always remember that the experiences here detail one pet parent’s story with a difficult to diagnose disease, and that every pet is different. The causes and care for rabbit paralysis are complex and should always be cared for in consultation with a veterinarian.

However, when applicable, natural options may be a big help, like it had for Heidi and her precious Biscotti!
