How Turmeric Can Help Kidney Stones In Pets

Bladder and Kidney stones in pets are a common condition. Read more to learn about how Turmeric can help support pets with this condition.

Bladder and kidney stones in pets are common problems. Your furkid may even experience this uncomfortable condition at one point in their life so it’s super important to be aware of the signs, symptoms, and types of natural support to help your little one feel better.

What Are Kidney or Bladder Stones?

As the names suggest, kidney and bladder stones are a formation of rock-like minerals that normally appear in the kidney or urinary bladders of our pets. These stones can range from a large, single stone to a collection of smaller grain-sized stones.

There are two types of bladder stones that are most common in pets, calcium oxalate stones, and struvite stones. Oxalate stones are more common to develop in acidic urine while struvite stones are more commonly found in alkaline urine. Oxalate stones are also usually very difficult to dissolve so surgery is normally recommended.

Dogs and cats with struvite stones tend to develop crystals in their urine while pets with calcium oxalate stones normally don’t.

There are also some breeds of dogs that are more prone to kidney and bladder stones, including the Miniature Schnauzer, Lhasa Apso, Shih Tzu, and Yorkshire Terrier. Cats that are more susceptible to kidney and bladder stones include the domestic short and long hair, Persian, and Siamese.

Causes of Calcium Oxalate Stones

Diet plays a huge role in the formation of calcium oxalate stones as these stones are a natural component of fruits, grains, and vegetables. So a diet consisting of a high oxalate content with foods like spinach, sweet potatoes, organ meat, and rice may be linked to the formation of oxalate stones. If you’re looking for diet advice for your pet, our in-house vet Dr. Amanda offers a personalized nutrition plan based on the health needs of your sweetheart.

Oxalate stones can also form as a result of lack of water intake so it’s important to make sure your furkiddo is staying hydrated!

Signs and Symptoms of Kidney Stones in Pets

The most common sign of stones to look for is difficulty urinating, also known as dysuria. The presence of stones can physically obstruct the bladder or kidneys, resulting in inflammation of the bladder walls. The disruption of urine flow causes abdominal discomfort to our precious furry friends.

Other signs to look for:

  • Lack of water intake
  • Blood in urine
  • Fever
  • Poor appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss

How Turmeric Can Help

While turmeric is categorized as a high oxalate food, the NHV Turmeric supplement contains a very low quantity of oxalates. Research shows that if not taken in large amounts, turmeric won’t cause any serious issues like kidney or bladder stones. It’s estimated that about 2% to 15% of oxalates obtained from NHV Turmeric gets absorbed, so giving Turmeric to your little one is totally safe!

Turmeric is a powerful herbal supplement containing strong anti-inflammatory properties that can be especially helpful to pets that are dealing with kidney and bladder stones. Turmeric can also help to support discomfort and important organs like the heart, liver, pancreas, and spleen while supporting gastrointestinal health.

Black pepper is also found in NHV Turmeric because it helps with absorption. It also helps to maximize the beneficial effects of Turmeric including antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties.

Additional Support

NHV Tripsy can also be a great addition to your pet’s natural regimen as it’s our main support for kidney health. The herbs in this unique blend can help to provide a soothing aid for flushing stones, reduce inflammation, and promotes urinary tract health.

The Kidney Failure Super Support Kit contains Tripsy, Turmeric, and Milk Thistle. Along with the already discussed benefits of Turmeric and Tripsy’s kidney support, NHV Milk Thistle can also be beneficial for pets with kidney or bladder stones as it can help to support kidney and liver function, which can encourage detoxification of the kidneys.
