Pawtriot Pops! 4th of July Treats For Dogs

Easy Recipes For Pets 2 min read
Pawtriot Pops! 4th of July treats for dogs on a plate next to strawberries, a bottle of NHV Lesstress, and a bottle of kefir

Looking for festive 4th of July treats for dogs? Check this out! This recipe only requires three ingredients, which you can swap out to fit your pup’s preferences. Frozen treats like this help keep your pet cool and hydrated in the summer heat!

You can use goat’s milk or alternatives like oat and coconut milk.

The main ingredient in this recipe is kefir. Kefir is a fermented milk product with probiotic benefits plus vitamins in minerals. Other dairy products like yogurt and milk have more lactose compared to kefir. If you’d prefer to not use kefir, you can use goat’s milk or alternatives like oat and coconut milk (unsweetened and unflavored). The kefir or milk you choose will be the white and blue parts of the treat.

To create the blue color, we added blue spirulina powder to the kefir. Blue spirulina is made from a type of algae that contains bacteria that has a naturally blue color. The blue pigment is extracted from the algae and turned into powder to be used as a natural food coloring. Both blue and green spirulina are considered to be superfoods as they have antioxidants, protein, and vitamins.

To create the red color, we used strawberries. Strawberries are low in calories but have benefits like antioxidants, vitamin C, and fiber. If your dog is not a fan of strawberries, you can replace them with other pet-safe, red produce like raspberries or red bell pepper.

While all of these ingredients have their benefits, it’s important to only serve them in moderation. Too much of a good thing can still cause diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset.

Ingredients

  • 1 ⅓ cup of kefir (or milk alternative)
  • 1 tsp of blue spirulina powder
  • ⅔ cup of strawberry (or red produce) purée
  • NHV supplement of your choice (for dogs scared of fireworks or crowds, we recommend NHV Lesstress)

Steps to Make 4th of July Treats for Dogs

1. Mix ⅔ cup of kefir with the blue spirulina until an even blue color.

2. Pour the blue kefir into an ice cube tray. Freeze for a couple of hours or until solid.

3. Purée strawberries and store them in the fridge for later.

4. Once frozen, pour the remaining (white) kefir into the ice cube tray and freeze.

5. Pour the final layer of strawberry purée on top of the ice cubes and freeze again.

6. Remove cubes from the tray and drizzle your favorite NHV supplement on top. For smaller dogs, it may be helpful to slice the cubes into smaller pieces.

7. Serve and let your pup enjoy!
