Pet Care during The Holidays

Pet Care Tips 3 min read

The paw-liday season is officially here. Between the shopping and the decorating, there is a lot to think about. But for the pet parents out there, we want to help you keep things simple so you can focus on the fun parts of the season.

Effective pet care during the holidays is all about finding a balance between the festive chaos and your pet’s comfort. Here is how you can keep your dogs and cats feeling their best.

Managing the Holiday Challenges

Loud music, ringing doorbells, and the chatter of unfamiliar guests can be overwhelming for many pets. If your cat disappears under the bed or your dog starts pacing when the house gets full, they are telling you they need a break.

Another challenge: stress can cause upset tummies. Add in the winter cold taxing their joints, the holidays can be a big challenge for your pet’s body!

We recommend creating a “den” in a quiet room, where your pet can retreat. Fill it with their favorite blankets and some soothing background noise to drown out the party. For those pets who need a little extra help this season, we suggest the Holiday Essentials Kit. This kit contains a helpful stack of supplements for common holiday challenges. NHV Yucca may help ease joints in the cold; NHV Plantaeris supports healthy digestion; and NHV Matricalm supports pets who are feeling that holiday-time stress!

Foods to Avoid + Pet-Safe Holiday Treats

We all want to include our pets in the holiday feast, but many traditional foods are off-limits. Chocolate, onions, garlic, and grapes are strictly “no-go” items. Even some fat or skin from the turkey can upset some pets tummies.

Instead of sharing your plate, why not offer them a pet-safe alternative?

  • A dollop of plain pumpkin: Great for digestion and very festive.
  • Home-made bone broth: Use those turkey or chicken bones (after removing all the meat) to simmer a safe, nutritious broth. Just be sure to never give the actual cooked bones to your pet, as these can splinter.
  • Fresh veggies: Crunchy green beans or small pieces of carrot are excellent, low-calorie treats.

You can also give your pet some tasty chef-made treats for some festive fun. NHV Pumpkin Treats are dehydrated to provide fiber and a satisfying crunch that pets love. Or, NHV Nutty Paw-Nanas give wholesome plant-based protein from peanut butter and chickpea flour.

Decorating with Safety in Mind

A decorated home is beautiful, but it can be a playground of hazards for a curious kitten or a wagging tail.

  • The Tree: Ensure it is securely anchored so it cannot be knocked over.
  • Ornaments: Glass decorations and tinsel are best kept on the higher branches. Tinsel is very dangerous if swallowed by cats as it can cause intestinal blockages.
  • Plants: Remember that holiday favorites like Poinsettias, Holly, and Mistletoe are toxic. Keep them well out of reach or opt for high-quality silk versions instead.

Travel Tips for Furry Passengers

If your holiday plans involve a road trip or a flight, start your preparations early. Make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are up to date. Pack a “travel kit” that includes their regular food, plenty of water, and a familiar-smelling toy to help them feel at home in a new environment. If your pet gets nervous in the car, NHV Matricalm or Lesstress may help them feel more at ease. These completely herbal supplements are vet-formulated, and can be given during the days leading up to travel and during for continued support.
