Superfoods, those that are nutrient-rich and offer additional health benefits, are growing in popularity with both humans and their four-legged friends. The infographic below shows us seven superfoods for our pooches. Here are some others to consider when feeding Fido:
Personal Pumpkin Plot
This one comes from personal experience as I once had a dog who pulled on a string from Berber carpeting and ended up digesting an amount equal to the size of a tennis ball. This I learned from a veterinary examination, complete with x-rays, showing images of the mass. My vet considered an operation but insisted we try a different remedy first: pumpkin. She showed me a large cabinet containing many cans of pure solid-pack pumpkin, the kind used to make pies, that she kept on hand for use in similar circumstances.
My veterinarian called later and told me to come and pick up my pet as she had “passed” the Berber she had consumed after eating pumpkin. To this day, I keep a small bag of frozen pumpkin in the freezer for “emergencies” and often feed some to my dog as a treat, she loves it! It’s also good for dogs with digestive issues.
Beware of dogs with possible food allergies or sensitive stomachs. Keep an eye on the ingredient list, and make sure to choose one without the artificial sweetener Xylitol, as it is toxic to pets.
Popular Peanut Butter
Whether you’re stuffing it into a toy or giving them a tablespoon to enjoy all on its own, opt for the natural, unsalted version of this tasty spread. It’s a good source of protein, not to mention an excellent photo opportunity for a quick snapshot to upload onto the internet. Beware of dogs with possible food allergies or sensitive stomachs.
