We get a lot of questions regarding the use of Hawthorn for dogs and cats. So today, we’ll list the benefits of this well-known natural heart tonic and discuss the correct usage for pets.

History of Crataegus monogyna

Crataegus monogyna, known as common Hawthorn, has a rich history as a natural remedy. Its use dates back to ancient civilizations such as the Greeks and Romans to help with heart conditions, improve digestion, and support liver and kidney health.

What is Hawthorn?

Hawthorn contains flavonoids, which help increase blood flow to the heart and strengthen heart muscle contraction.

As the name suggests, Hawthorns are small trees or shrubs with pointy thorns. This plant is commonly found in parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. Around May, the shrub gives space to white or pink flowers blooming in clusters. Later in the year, they produce small edible fruits that resemble berries.

Traditionally, the shrub’s fruit was the most commonly used ingredient for medicinal use. However, there are numerous species of the plant and historical evidence of preparations made from the flowers, leaves, and seeds in traditional European medicines and phototherapy.

Medicinal Properties of Hawthorn

Hawthorn is well-known for its cardio tonic properties. It contains antioxidants and anti-arrhythmic properties which help to increase enzyme metabolism in the heart muscle and regulate heart rate, coronary flow, and blood pressure.

Hawthorn has several medicinal properties that make it a valuable herb for dogs and cats. Some of the key benefits of this herb include:

  • Improves and strengthens cardiovascular health.
  • Regulates blood pressure.
  • Improves blood circulation.

Precautions with using Hawthorn for Dogs & Cats

Hawthorn is safe to consume by dogs and cats when given in the proper dosage, so always prefer vet-formulated products. If your little one is already taking other medications, please remember to respect a break of at least 30 minutes between the drugs and the herbal supplement. It’s best to keep your local veterinarian informed of your pet’s full regimen.

NHV Supplements that use Hawthorn

Hawthorn berries are included in two of our supplement formulations, Hearty-Heart and Resthyro. This ingredient is added at low concentration and balanced with other herbs, to help address cardiovascular problems in furkiddos. When the correct dosage is respected, the herb can help balance high blood pressure back to its normal level.

NHV Hearty-Heart is our main heart support supplement. Hawthorn in our Hearty-Heart formulation works by dilating the vessels and the coronary arteries, which improves the metabolic process and the blood supply to the heart and the rest of the body. The Crataegus monogyna berry works alongside Hops, Valerian, Lobelia, Balsam Poplar, and motherwort which are beneficial for supporting the heart, valves, and the entire pulmonary system.

NHV Resthyro is our main support for pets dealing with hyperthyroidism. Resthyro can also help support heart function and ease feelings of anxiety. It does this through extracts of potent ingredients such as Hawthorn, Valerian, and Bugleweed.
