What Do Pets Do While We’re Away?

Pet Care Tips 2 min read
Have you ever wondered what your pets do while you're away? Keep reading to find out more!

Imagine this: you’ve packed your belongings for the day, you’re putting on your shoes and you’re headed out for the day. You say your goodbyes to your furry friend and lock the door behind you. You’ve left them alone but, have you ever thought about what they do while you’re gone? We did too! Keep reading to learn more about what pets do when we’re away!

What Do They Do?

So, what are some things our little ones do while we’re away? Well, every furkiddo is unique. Some don’t mind a good long nap while others like to spend their time running zoomies around the house. Some bark or meow at every passerby and some enjoy quietly watching the world around them. In many cases, our sweethearts can get bored or can even face separation anxiety, which is totally normal!

While separation anxiety is super common in pets, it’s still important to try and support your furkiddo through this behavior so that your daily exit is a little easier on both of you. If not addressed, separation anxiety can lead to boredom, depression, obesity, and even destructive behavior.

Separation anxiety is more common in dogs than in cats, with 20-40% of them experiencing separation anxiety at one point or another.

Signs Your Furkid Doesn’t Like Being Left Alone:

Our sweethearts can show they’re in distress in many different ways, including but not limited to:

  • Chewing
  • Destructive behavior
  • Barking/howling
  • Excessive meowing
  • Pacing
  • Hiding
  • Accidents in the house
  • Reduced appetite

Some Things You Can Do

For Dogs:

  • Lesstress is a dietary supplement that can help to naturally promote calmness while reducing hyperactivity and anxiety
  • Leave them in a room with a view so that they can see outside to reduce boredom
  • Leave clothes out that smell like you as they can bring comfort to your pupper
  • Rotate their toys! Making sure they’ve got different toys to play with can help keep them entertained
  • Leave a TV/radio on (try and do this only for short trips, to be more eco-friendly and look out for your electricity bill!)

For Cats:

  • Matricalm is our dietary supplement that can help to naturally reduce agitation, anxiety, and aggression in cats
  • Climbing frames can be helpful in reducing anxiety and boredom because it lets your kitty see the outside world
  • Install a bird feeder near the window
  • Got a fish tank? Your kitty could spend all day just watching the fish go by!

We can only imagine how weird it must be for our furkids when we leave. Thankfully there are still lots of ways you can support your little one and set them up for success every day! As furparents, our top priority is to make sure our little ones stay as happy as possible, even when we’re not there. Whether your furkid is the type to lounge around all day or bounce off the walls, we know that you love them all the same!
