Have you ever looked up alfalfa for dogs and cats? You may have heard about the benefits of alfalfa on human health, so what benefits does it provide our furry friends? Is alfalfa safe for pets? Well lucky for you, we’re here to answer these questions!

What is Alfalfa?

Also known as Medicago sativa, this plant is a sprawling member of the pea family. It has small clover-like leaves and flowers ranging in color from lilac to purple. This plant likely originated in central Asia and was later brought over to China some 2000 years ago. Later, it was brought to Northern Africa and Spain during the rise of the Ottoman Empire in the 8th century, where it became known as alfalfa. This Arabic word roughly translates to ‘horse power’ or ‘best horse fodder.’ Alfalfa first blooms in early summer and then continues to grow throughout the growing season, weather permitting. It will grow just about anywhere but may quickly become an invasive species in your garden (so beware!) The most common parts used are the dried leaves, stems, and unopened flowers.

History of the Alfalfa Plant

Due to its nutrient density and ability to help stimulate growth hormone, alfalfa is commonly used as a livestock feed; hence its name, which roughly translates to ‘best horse fodder’ in Arabic. This plant has strong affinities with the musculoskeletal system, digestive tract, and liver.

Medicinal Properties of Medicago sativa

Alfalfa contains a broad range of nutrients, dietary fiber, vitamins A, B1, B12, C, D, E, K, and compounds like chlorophyll, which acts as an effective blood detoxifier. Studies show that alfalfa may provide long-term relief for arthritis, rheumatism, and gout when added as a daily supplement. Alfalfa may even have cancer-fighting properties as well.

How Can You Use Alfalfa Safely For Dogs and Cats?

Medicago sativa is a non-toxic plant that may offer a range of nutrients and other healing benefits for your furkiddo! But like anything in life, too much of a good thing can still be too much. Keep in mind that this herb is only safe for pets when formulated at a safe dosage for their weight. Don’t forget that you can always consult your veterinarian for proper supervision and dosage information.
