Foods to Include and Avoid for Pets with Thyroid Imbalance

Pet Care Tips 3 min read

Like any body system or vital organ, diet can impact the thyroid gland, an essential organ for the body’s metabolism. This crucial organ can be affected not only by the quality of a pet’s food but also by specific nutrients that are intrinsically involved in this gland’s function. Because of this, pets with thyroid imbalance must have a balanced diet with the appropriate amount of key nutrients.

In this blog, we review the importance of nutrition and a holistic approach in pets with thyroid imbalance. We do so with the understanding that every case is different and that personalized nutritional guidance is the best way to provide optimal dietary care.

Foods to Include for Pets with Thyroid Imbalance

Prescribed medication is not the only way to support a pet’s health. A holistic approach should also consider other important factors, like nutrition. Certain nutrients can promote healthy thyroid function. Being aware of their potential benefits and including them in your furry companion’s diet is a good way to support their health.

Here we describe some of the nutrients that can support thyroid health.

Protein

Protein is important for thyroid health and symptoms related to thyroid imbalances.

It’s one of the necessary nutrients for proper hormone production. High-quality, fresh, and highly digestible protein should always be offered for both hypo- and hyperthyroidism. In the case of hyperthyroidism, this condition often leads to muscle loss and protein deficiency. Therefore, increased protein intake may sometimes be needed. On the other hand, since hypothyroidism can lead to being overweight, low-fat protein sources are typically preferred for this condition.

Omega-3

Omega-3 oils are also beneficial for pets with thyroid imbalance. They promote healthy thyroid function and hormone production. Other vital functions and organs also require omega-3s for healthy functioning.

Iodine

Iodine is a mineral that participates intrinsically in thyroid function, and it’s key to its health. Feeding healthy pups and kitties with a diet that meets the recommended Iodine levels is also crucial. For furry friends with thyroid imbalance, it’s best to follow a veterinarian’s instructions regarding supplementation or deprivation of this micronutrient, as the needs can vary depending on the condition and its phase.

Selenium

Another relevant mineral for thyroid health is selenium. This micronutrient also has an important role in thyroid hormone production, and it has been seen that inadequate amounts of it could be related to thyroid imbalance. Providing your little one with a diet containing an adequate amount of selenium should also be considered.

Foods to Avoid

On the other hand, certain foods have the potential to disrupt thyroid function. These are called “goitrogenic foods” and can affect the thyroid by interfering with the proper function of this organ. However, it’s necessary to keep in mind that the effect that these foods can have on a pet’s health depends on the amount and frequency, and their thyroid health status, and they’re not inherently “bad foods.”

Some goitrogenic foods are: cabbage, millet, rutabagas, sweet potatoes, turnips, seaweed, various beans (including soybeans), foods with excessive or deficient iodine, among others.

If your little one was diagnosed with a thyroid imbalance, it’s better to avoid these foods. Nevertheless, since thyroid imbalances are dynamic and complex conditions, following your trusted vet’s instructions is always the best course of action.

How Natural Support Fits In

At NHV, we believe that every health condition should be addressed using a holistic approach, as it allows pets to get the benefits from medical treatments, appropriate nutrition, mental well-being, and natural supplements support.

Because of that, we’ve formulated two main supplements to support thyroid imbalances. For hyperthyroidism, we have NHV Resthyro. It’s an herbal blend that helps balance thyroid hyperactivity and relieve hyperthyroid-related symptoms such as excessive appetite, thirst, and urination. It also supports the heart, a commonly affected organ, helps relieve tension and irritability, and aids with digestion.

For hypothyroidism, we developed NHV Thyro-Up,

For hypothyroidism, we developed NHV Thyro-Up, an herbal formula that stimulates an underactive thyroid gland, provides immune support, helps elevate energy levels, promotes healthy skin and coat, weight management, and metabolism, and supports the pancreas to aid with digestion and nutrient absorption.

Additionally, as nutrition is crucial for thyroid health, we also offer a Personalized Nutritional Plan. Our in-house holistic veterinarian, Dr. Amanda, will formulate a nutritional plan based on your little one’s unique needs.
