Vet Talks: From Rescuing Street Animals to Becoming a Veterinarian, Dr. Amanda’s Story

Since I was a little kid, growing up in Brazil, I was always passionate about animals. This passion was influenced by my family’s love for animals. My grandfather had more than 15 cats, dogs, and horses at one time. Unfortunately, Brazil has many street animals. So, it is very easy to find pets in need there.

When I was 4 years old, on a very rainy and cold day, I saw some street animals without any food or shelter. I approached them and said: “Wait, when I am an adult I will care for you.”  As time passed, I kept my promise.

Personally, I’ve always had many animals. All of them I rescued from the street or they were adopted. For example: Billy my little dog, I found on a highway. Someone just left this little boy there. Frederico, he was abandoned at a vet clinic because he wasn’t pure-bred. Mel, someone dumped in front of my house. Tasy, after a long night working in a veterinary hospital I found her starving in the street. She was just a puppy. I have many other stories about my animals. I’ve lost count of how many pets I’ve had.

After finishing my master’s in veterinary science, I had the opportunity to start teaching. All my students were doting animal lovers so we got an idea. Why not take animals from the street, care for them and find them lovely homes? And we started to do exactly that.

Once we found a homeless woman, living with many dogs, cats, and even a sheep. We asked her if we could help her with the animals. She agreed immediately. Those days we had a lot of work. We bathed all the animals, collected blood to run tests, administered medication, and we decided to help her with all support for the animals for an undetermined time. We also asked her if we could find an owner for them, but she did not accept. She said that she loved them and could not give them away.

This is just one of the stories that I have about my love for street animals. I have many, many others.

When I was working on my Ph.D. I was awarded a scholarship from the government of Canada to be a part of the Emerging Leaders of America Program (ELAP) with a group of 25 students. During those days I had the opportunity to be in Ottawa and learn about Canada, also I was at the University of Saskatchewan (Veterinary School) as part of my Ph.D.

Catnip day at U of S is an initiative to spay and neuter cats from rural communities in Saskatchewan.

Finishing my Ph.D., I had the opportunity to continue my training as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Saskatchewan for the program ITraP (Integrated Training Program in Infectious Disease, Food Safety and Public Policy) However, I felt a strong desire to continue to help poor animals, but I did not know how to do that, because Canada does not have many street animals. A friend of mine, another veterinarian, told me about Catnip day at U of S. It is an initiative to spay and neuter cats from rural communities in Saskatchewan. So, I was there to help, and I can say that I had a blast!!!

No matter where I am living, I always am working to keep my promise, helping poor animals.
