Game Days with Pets Are Evolving

Pet Care Tips 4 min read

A new study shows that pets are changing the ways we experience game days and sports viewings. It turns out about 70% of pet parents have made changed to their plans in favor of their fur kiddo! And about 1 in 5 cancelled their plans to view the game entirely to be with their pet. As pet parents increasingly see their fur kids as family members, it’s no surprise that game days with pets at home are being prioritized. No one wants to feel left out – even if they’re on four legs!

Here are five ways that our furry friends are being included during game days, and some inspiration to include your own fur kiddos during big match fun.

#1 The Rise of The Furry Mascot

Jerseys, bandanas, and matching team colors are no longer just for the human fans. Your pet can dress up in your team’s fave colors, too, joining in on the festive fun.

What better way to make them feel included than by seeing fur kiddos rocking miniature sports kits, transforming our little ones into little good luck charms before the big game. Plus, they make for an amazing pic opportunity!

#2 Snacktime for Pets

While we may be reaching for wings, nachos, and other classic game day snacks, fur kids are no longer stuck staring at us with begging eyes. Pet parents are increasingly reaching for pet-friendly ways to help fur kids celebrate in the tastiest way: with a snack!

The CFIA-certified NHV kitchen has been crafting the best treats for the occasion. From the single-ingredient NHV Ocean Cod Crunch made from wild-caught cod, to the crunchy and wholesome NHV Only Beets! perfect for recovery after a play session, NHV treats a healthy way to liven up game days with pets.

One idea? Make a platter with two or three of their favorites, and bring them out whenever the human food is going around. That way they feel included in the fun!

#3 Strategically Use Halftime

Remember how people are changing or cancelling their game day plans due to their pets? Well, with a little strategizing, you may not have to. Just use half time!

Halftime used to be for grabbing a second helping of food. But it could be the perfect window for a quick break outside or even a short walk to help burn off some nervous energy and get a bit of fresh air from all the indoor excitement.

It can also be a good time to check on the non-dog fur kids. Cats may find parties overwhelming, so it’s a good time to check in on them and make sure they’ve got some water and food close to their hiding spot. Fur kids, like rabbits and ferrets, are best kept in their cages.

#4 Be Ready to Step in with Emotional Support

Sports can be stressful for some fur kids. While many will enjoy the excitement, sometimes shouting for your team can just cause confusion and stress, especially when the game gets tense or there was a brilliant goal!

Some pets will do better if you set up a quiet, secluded area for them, rather than being included. For the naturally anxious fur kids who worry more often than just during game days, you may need to address chronic stress and anxiety at the vet office. In addition to their recommendations, NHV Lesstress is a gentle, vet-approved support with herbs like chamomile to help encourage ease and relaxation. It may help them keep their chill during thunderstorms, vet visits, and even a rambunctious game day or two!

#5 Create the Sports Star Fantasy

More and more pets being included during game days. Therefore, it’s important to remember how to have fun from a pet’s perspective!

Your fur kid probably loves to watch the game, but moreso because they have the urge to chase the ball! Be sure to take them outside with a ball or toy of their own for a game to satisfy those pent up urges. The exercise is good for their heart and health, too!

Have A Happy Game Day!

Sports excitement is at an all-time high. And if you ask us, including our fur kids makes it all the more exciting. Remember to keep help them feel included and to pay attention to their needs. With this in mind, you’re set for a winning evening!
