Peanut butter is high in protein and is a good source of vitamins and proteins. Peanut butter contains healthy fats and is a source of magnesium, zinc, potassium, niacin, vitamin B-6, and vitamin E. Since peanut butter has all these benefits, it makes a great snack in moderation but there are important things to look out for when choosing peanut butter. Many kinds of peanut butter contain artificial sweeteners like xylitol which is toxic to petsWhen buying peanut butter choose one that does not contain sugar, any xylitol, and has a low amount of sodium. Making your own peanut butter at home is a way of ensuring that your peanut butter does not contain artificial sweeteners and is low in sodium.

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 cups of unsalted peanuts
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  • Baking sheet with parchment paper
  • Food processor or blender

Steps

1. Evenly spread your unshelled, unroasted, unsalted peanuts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350°F or 175°C for 5 minutes.

2. Remove from oven and allow to cool. If your peanuts still have skins on them, place them in a tea towel when cool and gently rub them inside the cloth to remove the skins.

3. Blend the cool peanuts in a blender or food processor until they are crushed. Then add 1 tbsp of coconut oil and continue to blend. Add the second tbsp of coconut oil if necessary for creamy consistency. Keep blending until smooth. If the consistency is too thick, you can add water a tsp at a time until you reach your desired consistency.

Store your peanut butter in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 month.
