Caring For a Blind Dog or Cat

Pet Care Tips 3 min read
Caring For a Blind Dog or Cat

As our pets age, they may develop some type of vision loss or in some cases have total blindness. It’s very stressful for any pet parent to witness their beloved dog or cat becoming blind and the disorientation that comes with it. Pets may yowl or bark at night, bump into objects, or have difficulty finding their food. The good news is that our dogs and cats are extremely resilient; with a little help from their human guardians, blind or vision-impaired pets can have happy lives too.

Here are 4 easy steps to making a blind dog or cat’s life easier, safer and happier.

Keep a positive attitude

Your cat or dog may become withdrawn as their blindness develops. It’s important to talk to them often and in a happy, cheery voice. Keep up with their routine and make sure to give them lots of attention, so that they know they are and will always be an important member of your family.

Scent and Sound Games

Since your dog or cat will now rely more on their other senses, pet parents should focus games on a pet’s sense of smell and sound. Not only will this be a fun activity to build confidence in your pet, but it can also help further develop these senses and may help to keep them safer in their surroundings. If you’re training your dog, use verbal cues, not hand gestures, and reinforce those verbal cues with a clicker.

Create a Safe Space

Your dog or cat will need to rely on you to create a safe home environment for them. Make sure to pick up or move any objects, which could be hazardous to your dog or cat. It’s also extremely important to gate off areas like stairs or swimming pools.

Bring Out The Bells and Whistles For Your Fur Baby

Blind cats and dogs may become easily startled. In addition to always announcing your presence in a soft and happy voice, you can try putting on a small bell on your shoes. If there are other pets in the household, make sure everyone has a different sounding bell so that your blind cat or dog knows who’s coming.

Caring for a blind dog or cat is easier than most people think. With a little TLC, your cat or dog can feel confident and happy.

Even if your pet has not been diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes, it is a good idea to begin preventative care early.

If your senior pet isn’t suffering from vision loss yet – that’s fantastic, however, please don’t forget that preventative measures can make all the difference in your pet’s health. There are some underlying diseases that may cause blindness in senior pets: These are kidney failure and resulting hypertension that comes with kidney failure, as well as diabetes in dogs and cats. Even if your pet has not been diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes, it is a good idea to begin preventative care early. Preventative care includes diet and herbal supplementation to maintain health. See our supplement recommendations below.
