kidney & bladder support
This is Mort. Cute, loved, and like an estimated 50% of cats eventually will, learning to live with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
A Chronic Kidney Disease diagnosis for any pet parent can feel like a stab to the heart as we worry about our pet’s future. However, there is much reason to hope; with early intervention, we can slow the disease and provide comfort for our pets.
Mort’s story is just that – one from uncertainty and change to resilience and adaptation.
The love Mort’s owner has for him definitely helped as they began their journey with cat Chronic Kidney Disease care, and become a CKD warrior!
ABOUT CKD IN CATS (CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE)
Kidney Disease, sometimes known as Kidney Failure, has two types. Acute Kidney Disease is the sudden cessation of important kidney functioning. Chronic Kidney Disease is the progressive loss of healthy kidney functioning over time.
In cats, CKD will manifest as lethargy, weight loss, and increased urination. Blood tests can help diagnose Kidney Disease, as the kidney will no longer be able to filter certain waste products out of the blood, like creatinine.
A vet may provide fluids intravenously if dehydration becomes an issue.
MORT’S CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE STORY
Mort has stage four chronic kidney disease. Making matters more complicated, Mort was struggling with diarrhea, which worsens dehydration.
However, Mort stayed tough when getting extra fluids at the vet’s office. Alongside vet care, Mort’s owner has been using a supplement regimen.
We’re still giving him Milk Thistle and Tripsy, and we’re definitely seeing improvement in that he is drinking much less water while his hydration levels are staying up ( as measured at his neck).
NHV PRODUCTS FOR CKD IN CATS
Like many pet conditions, a care regimen for CKD in cats can be complemented with natural health supplements. The supplements Mort’s owner used? Our go-tos for kidney supports formulated by vets: Milk Thistle and Tripsy.
Milk Thistle: Contains 100% certified organic milk thistle seed. The active ingredient of Milk Thistle is Silymarin, which is known as an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. Particularly important for cats with CKD, Milk Thistle can be beneficial for detoxification support and for promoting cellular regeneration and repair.
Tripsy: Has a formulation with gentle herbal ingredients that can help encourage kidney health, including ingredients well-known in holistic health approaches for kidney support, like Stone Root, Parsley Piert, and Gravel Root.
IBD and Diarrhea Super Support: Because hydration is a complication of CKD, helping to prevent diarrhea and encourage gut health is important. This recommended bundle has TumFlora and Plantaeris to help soothe the GI tract and help relieve nausea, cramping, and watery stools in pets.
The love Mort’s owner has for him definitely helped as they began their journey with cat Chronic Kidney Disease care; they helped him not only to battle CKD, but become a CKD warrior!

Natural Remedies for Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Dogs and Cats with Additional Diarrhea Support
Typically with inflammatory bowel disease in dogs and cats, your vet will likely recommend a change in diet (since the underlying cause may be related to food allergies). They may prescribe medications and possible nutritional therapy. Our IBD and Diarrhea Super Support Kit contains TumFlora and Plantaeris. These two formulations work together to promote gut health and effective digestion, as well as ease common symptoms of IBD in pets like diarrhea and cramping. Both natural IBD supplements can be taken alongside vet-prescribed medications (though we do recommend spacing the supplements and medication by 2 hours to be easier on your little one).
If you are interested in a gut-friendly nutrition plan, or inflammatory bowel disease diet recommendations for dogs, NHV’s in-house vet Dr. Amanda can work with you to create a personalized plan for your pet's unique needs.
How NHV Supplements Relieve Diarrhea and Irritable Bowel Disease in Pets
Pets may occasionally experience diarrhea or an upset tummy because maybe they ate too quickly, not enough, or something didn't quite sit right. But consistent runny poos are an alarm bell that something is going on with their digestive health.
TumFlora : contains ingredients like chamomile, licorice root, and ashwagandha, which have been used for centuries to help ease indigestion, muscle cramping and inflammation in the intestinal tract. This balanced IBD pet supplement also contains herbs like Indian gooseberry and fennel seed which may help reduce nausea and encourage healthy movement through the bowels. TumFlora also helps naturally balance intestinal gut flora and can be used alongside probiotics for dogs or cats.
Plantaeris: contains a blend of herbs that work gently and quickly to help alleviate diarrhea and loose stools. Herbs like barberry and bayberry contain soothing properties to help control diarrhea-causing bacteria and control infection. This blend is well-balanced with ingredients like myrrh, and thyme, which may help to expel gas and may promote healing and relief for overall digestive discomfort.
Holistic Support For your Pet’s GI Tract Health
When your furkiddo has IBD, inflammatory cells invade the gastrointestinal tract of your pet, which encompasses the stomach, small, and large intestine. Once inflammatory cells start taking over the GI tract, the intestinal wall may thicken over time and disrupt the absorption and movement of food. It’s unclear what may cause IBD in dogs, cats or other pets, but some potential causes are food allergies, parasites, and autoimmune conditions. A fairly common symptom of IBD in dogs and cats is diarrhea because the GI tract is damaged, so food may not be fully digested or eliminated. If we are to use a simple analogy, pets with inflammatory bowel disease can have diarrhea that may range from a soft-serve ice cream consistency to pretty much like clear water.
Having a healthy pet means the world to us at NHV. Providing your furkiddo with natural support for their digestion and gastrointestinal tract can help improve their quality of life and promote vitality! - Help support the body to be able to fight infection

- Help balance the body
Chronic kidney failure or chronic renal failure in cats and dogs are major causes of illness and death in senior pets. Chronic kidney or renal failure can be caused by a diet heavy in processed food, as well as untreated dental infections which cause oral bacteria to travel throughout the body and cause liver, heart, or kidney infections.
A functioning urinary system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra is vital to your cat or dog’s well-being since it helps to:
- Rid the body of waste
- Maintain the balance of water and electrolytes
- Produce hormones that help maintain blood pressure
- Help the body process vitamin D
The combination of Tripsy and Milk Thistle will help aid your dog or cat with chronic renal failure by helping to inhibit further bladder infections, flushing kidney stones, and helping alleviate symptoms of uncomfortable urination. As toxins build up in the body, Milk Thistle will aid in strengthening the liver, which will aid with removing toxins from the body.
See your vet if you observe the following symptoms of chronic renal failure in your cat or dog:
- A decrease/increase in urination and thirst
- Decreased appetite
- Foul breath
- Lethargy
With proper support, which includes diet, a pet with CRF can live a relatively comfortable life for years.

Over 75 lb = 3.0 mlHow to Administer
Shake well before use. The easiest method is to use the dropper provided and place the drops into your pet’s food or favorite treat. You can also use the dropper and squirt directly into the pet’s mouth.
Some pets can be finicky. If this occurs, consider hiding the drops in foods most pets love, such as fish, chicken, yogurt, or a favorite treat. If your pet only eats dry food, then soak a few kibbles at feeding time.
For Best Results
Herbal dietary supplements are beneficial to the health and well-being of your pet and are safe for long-term use. Every pet responds to natural herbal supplements differently. Therefore, it is important to be consistent and administer the product daily. Supplements generally take two to four weeks to take effect; however, the interval will vary from one animal to the next.
