Congestive Heart Failure in cats – Chewy’s Prognosis

Chewy had a rough start to life before he was adopted by his forever mom Sylvie. He had spent his early life locked in a basement and under tremendous fear and stress. The stress, lack of human connection, and limited space to roam did not bode well for Chewy’s health.

After Chewy was adopted Sylvie provided more than just the necessities to ensure his life turned around! For 6 months, he never showed any signs of having health issues but one day his health plummeted and a terrified, upset Sylvie rushed him to a veterinarian.

The veterinarian advised her that Chewy has Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). This is a condition where the heart cannot deliver enough blood to the pet’s body. It can be caused by a failure of the left, right, or both sides of the heart. The body can usually compensate to ensure tissues receive the blood and oxygen they need but as the disease progresses, these mechanisms become overwhelmed. The heart is then unable to pump enough blood to the body and the fluid will back up, most commonly in the lungs which cause congestion of the lung tissue.

The prognosis was not good, and she was told that he may have only 7 months to live.

Sylvie decided to give Chewy’s health her best shot. First of all, she changed his diet to an all-natural food one and additionally provided fish oil to ensure he had a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids that are great for heart health, cognition, and a healthy coat. She also found NHV’s Hearty-Heart. This supplement helps to stabilize heart activity, strengthen heart health, support healthy blood flow, act as a mild expectorant to release fluid from the lungs, and relaxes the heart muscle to soothe coughing.

This regimen helped to improve his vitality and Hearty Heart would help provide Chewy with relief from his symptoms.

2 years after Chewy’s initial prognosis, he passed away. It was a terribly sad day for his Momma but she knew that she had done her best to give Chewy a wonderful life and provided him with the necessities he needed to live out his last years, long past his prognosis; in her caring and loving arms.

Traveler of the World!
Traveler of the World!

Chewy’s mom now has a lovely 12 yr old Birman whom she adopted from a local shelter in Thompson Manitoba Canada. The newly adopted baby has traveled the world with her Momma from Toronto, Germany, driving through Europe, and now lives in Warsaw Poland! This brave, brilliant, traveler of the world plays nurse to Sylvie when she is ill.

Given that she’s older now, Momma saw she needed some support for her bones and joints although she’s all-around very healthy!

NHV suggested Old Timer and Turmeric as this combination works wonders in easing uncomfortable arthritis symptoms and has great anti-inflammatory properties. This is very helpful in helping your beloved pets live a comfortable and agile life! In fact, we have a great bundle that will help to support your senior pet and save you some pennies too!

Thank you Sylvie for being a part of the NHV Family! If it wasn’t for lovely Pawrents like you, these little fur babies would have a rough go at life. Thanks to you, they thrive!
