How Rescued Ingredients Help Reduce Landfill Waste and Feed Your Pets Better

NHV Behind The Scenes 3 min read

Ever seen a carrot with a few bumps or an apple that’s just a little too speckled for the grocery store shelf? It might not be perfect-looking, but it’s still perfectly nutritious. We think that’s a lesson we can all learn from – especially when it comes to feeding our pets! After all, our pets only care about taste and little about whether an apple is perfectly round or if a pumpkin has no bumps.

That’s why we turn rescued produce into healthy pet treats. It’s better for the planet, and amazing for their health!

What Exactly Are Rescued Ingredients?

Rescued ingredients do not meet the visual standards for sale in regular stores because of their cosmetic “flaws.” These could be fruits or vegetables that are a bit misshapen or have slight discoloration. Think about how different a carrot that you grew in your garden looks versus a carrot you can find at the grocery store. Often, the garden-grown ones have differences you wouldn’t find in the grocery store. Compare these carrots:

These so-called perfect carrots meet strict visual standards of how a carrot “should” look like.
These carrots have bends and dents, so they may be thrown away – despite being just as nutritious!

Even with these imperfections, their nutritional value is still the same. The only difference is that we humans have a silly preference for produce without natural variations. Our pets, on the other hand, don’t much care. So long as they taste the same, they’ll gobble up rescued ingredients all the same and be happy for them too!

A Sustainable Choice for A Greener Future

But throwing away the carrot bunch with bends and bumps won’t make a big difference; they’ll just decompose, right? Well…

Perfectly good food often ends up being disposed of and taken to the landfill.

Every year, over 1 billion tons of food waste is generated. That means food that has gone bad, food scraps that weren’t composted, and, of course, fruit and vegetables that don’t sell due to their imperfections. When this produce is discarded, it takes up valuable space and releases harmful gases as it decomposes. In fact, food loss and waste can generate up to 8-10 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions. That’s more than the aviation industry!

Rescuing fruit and vegetables helps keep thousands of pounds of waste out of landfills every day, reducing the burden on waste systems and lessening the environmental impact. Plus, it helps keep the agricultural and food industries more sustainable.

As a pet parent, there are many ways you can play a role in helping to reduce food waste. If you prepare food for your pet and it doesn’t get eaten, always compost the leftovers (this goes for your food, too!). And when choosing food and treats, choose pet treats that use sustainable ingredients, like rescued fruits and vegetables.

Rescued Ingredients for Healthier Pets

We’ve always believed that nature can support your pet’s health – that’s why we started NHV! Now, twenty years later, we’re advocating for pet health in a new way: through our new line of pet treats, which use rescued ingredients.

For example, we’ve turned rescued sweet potatoes that have cosmetic imperfections into tasty treats for pets. NHV Dried Sweet Potato Chips have protective antioxidants, gut-healthy fiber, and vitamin A, which supports vision.

We’ve done the same for our Beet Treats and Dehydrated Pumpkin Treats – all made with produce we saved from becoming waste. Plus, each of these treats has its own unique wellness benefits and can pair well with your fur kiddo’s supplement regimen.
