Natural Remedies For Cushing’s Disease in Dogs: Pooka’s Story

Inspiring Pet Tails 3 min read

Pet parents usually notice subtle changes in their lovebugs better than anyone else. Pooka’s furparents are an example of that. Small things here and there made them feel like something was not quite right. They realized that she was showing symptoms similar to Cushing’s disease. They immediately made a trip to the vet’s office but the tests were inconclusive. So, Pooka’s pawrents began searching for natural remedies for Cushing’s disease in dogs, and they found us!

What is Cushing’s Disease?

Cushing’s disease happens when the adrenal glands produce too much hormone called cortisol. Cortisol helps pets respond to stress, helps control their weight and blood sugar levels, and helps combat infections. However, too much or too little cortisol can cause health issues.

Some common symptoms of Cushing’s disease are:

  • increased thirst and hunger
  • urinating more often
  • bladder stones
  • hair loss
  • low energy levels
  • potbellied abdomen
  • skin infections

What are the Causes of Cushing’s Disease?

There are three types of conditions that can lead to Cushing’s disease:

  1. Pituitary tumors – the most common cause of Cushing’s disease.
  2. Adrenal gland tumors – 15% of dogs often have this type.
  3. Excessive cortisol from overuse of steroids.

Knowing the cause is important to find the right treatment for your little one, so a vet visit is necessary once you suspect your pet may have Cushing’s. However, a vet visit may be stressful for your little one, so prepare them to help make the visit as smooth as possible for both you and your pet.

How is Cushing’s Syndrome Diagnosed?

Your vet usually does a few tests to determine the underlying health conditions. Bloodwork and urine tests are recommended to see if there are bladder, kidney, or bone issues.

If the results show positive signs of Cushing’s, the vets follow up with hormone screening tests such as the ACTH stimulation test or LDDS test.

Pooka’s Natural Remedies for Cushing’s Disease in Dogs

Supraglan is our main support for Cushing’s in dogs and cats.

After no diagnosis for Pooka, her parents decided to start her on a regimen of Supraglan, Multi Essentials, Milk Thistle, and ES-Clear. All of these supplements except for ES-Clear are included in our Cushings Disease Super Support and Nutritional Balance Kit.

Supraglan is our main support for Cushing’s in dogs and cats. It contains beneficial herbs like borage, astragalus, and eleuthero to help regulate water levels, help support adrenal gland function, promote healthy skin and coat, and help control appetite. We recommend using Supraglan when your vet has diagnosed or strongly suspects adrenal issues.

Multi Essentials is rich with minerals and vitamins that can help fill nutritional voids and help improve energy levels.

Milk Thistle supports liver function, promotes detoxification, and encourages the natural regeneration of the liver.

ES-Clear is our main supplement for pets with cancer. It can also promote detoxification, help improve energy levels, help balance the immune system, promote digestion, and help increase appetite.

Our supplements can be used safely alongside vet-prescribed medications. It is best to double-check with your vet for the most beneficial treatment.

Pooka’s Transformation

We received an update on Pooka after she had already been taking the supplements for a while. It filled our hearts with joy! Here is what her furparents told us:

They did blood work and wanted to do another round of ultrasounds. They found a small tumor on her right adrenal gland that they’ve missed before, and Pooka was diagnosed with Cushing’s. They told me to put her on the medication, but I declined and said that the drops were helping. I will consider it once the drops stop working.

Fast forward another four months, and with a new vet (who takes the time to listen to her patients), all Pooka’s issues have cleared. The vet said she couldn’t legally tell me the drops worked, but she also said I shouldn’t change a thing! I’m blown away. I am a believer in science and medicine. However, sometimes herbal is the way to go, even as an addition to medication.

Thanks for the quality of ingredients and thought to every product!

We are so grateful that her family gave us a chance to help Pooka and that they were proactive in supporting their little one. We are sending our best wishes to sweet Pooka and hope that she will continue to stay strong!

    1. Team NHV says:

      Hi Sue,

Thank you so much for reaching out to us.

We’re so sorry to hear that your pup is dealing with all those conditions. We can only imagine how uncomfortable he must be. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for doing everything possible for your sweetheart.

We have a few recommendations for your boy that we think could help:

First, we would suggest our Supraglan blend to help with his Cushing’s diagnosis. The herbs found in Supraglan can help to support adrenal health, regulate water and electrolyte levels, produce hormones that aid in controlling appetite, and can support the body’s response to stress and inflammation.

Second, we’d suggest our Hearty-Heart supplement to help with his enlarged heart. This powerful yet gentle supplement can help to support overall heart health, reduce uncomfortable symptoms like difficulty breathing and coughs, and can help to naturally boost blood flow.

Next, we would suggest Milk Thistle. As your little one is dealing with liver issues, and since traditional medications can take a toll on the liver and kidneys, we think the addition of Milk Thistle would be very beneficial to your pup. Milk Thistle can help to support the liver as well as the kidneys and can help to encourage liver regeneration.

And lastly, we would suggest Turmeric. This powerful supplement can help to reduce inflammation, manage discomfort, and can help to support vital organs like the liver and heart.

We wanted to let you know that our supplements are completely safe to be taken alongside vet-prescribed medications as additional support! We just recommend keeping a window of about 30 minutes to 2 hours, just to avoid overwhelming your boy.

We know this is lots of information to take in so please take your time to review everything, we’d be more than happy to help if you have any questions at all!

We’re sending you and your precious boy all our love and positive vibes.

      Yours in wellness,
      Team NHV
