Supporting Your Mast Cell Tumor Dog

Inspiring Pet Tails 3 min read
Lola is a mast cell tumor dog with so much love and light to share with the world!

Getting the diagnosis that you have a mast cell tumor dog can be really tough news for both you and your furkiddo. While the news can be devasting, there are still lots of ways that you can support your sweetheart through their health condition. Keep reading to learn more about our little furriend Lola’s triumphant story!

Lola The Mast Cell Tumor Dog

Little Lola is a 14-year-old miniature pinscher with a whole lot of love to give! When we first met this sweet girl, she was dealing with a mast cell tumor that had formed near the base of her tail. On top of that, she was also dealing with chronically elevated liver enzymes (ALKP). Lola’s furmom, Sherry, wanted to do everything she could to support her little one and reached out to us. Since then we’ve worked closely with Sherry with the goal of making sure Lola continues to stay as comfortable and as happy as possible.

What Are Mast Cell Tumors?

A mast cell tumor (MCT) is a type of tumor that consists of mast cells. It’s one of the most common types of skin tumors in dogs. MCT’s normally form in nodules or masses but can also affect other important organs like the liver, spleen, or intestines.

MCT’s are mostly diagnosed in middle-aged to older dogs and are more commonly seen in breeds like bull terriers, boxers, labrador retrievers, and pugs.

Mast cell tumors are one of the most common types of skin tumors in dogs.

Symptoms of mast cell tumors in dogs can include:

  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Tarry stools (black stools)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Ulcers

Lola’s Treatment Plan

To support Lola, her vet prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication. Lola also underwent a successful removal surgery this past fall.

Lola’s Natural Wellness Journey

Given Lola’s health condition and symptoms, we devised a natural treatment plan designed specifically for Lola’s unique needs.

For Lola, we suggested Milk Thistle, Yucca, Turmeric, Multi Essentials, Stimmune, and Old Timer. When used together, these powerful herbal supplements can help to maintain liver health, improve appetite, reduce inflammation, promote overall vitality, provide the body with essential vitamins and minerals, balance immune health, and support bone and joint health.

A mast cell tumor dog diet is a key part of making sure a furkiddo with this condition reaches their wellness goals. Our in-house veterinarian, Dr. Amanda, created a personalized nutrition plan specific to what sweet Lola needs to feel more comfortable. Lola’s new diet is a home-cooked diet consisting of proteins like beef, chicken, sardines, and veggies like carrots, potatoes, and broccoli. Lola is also taking eggshell powder because it’s rich in important minerals like calcium, potassium, and magnesium!

Making Progress

Sherry checked in with us and we were absolutely thrilled by what she said next!

Her blood levels are starting to move in the right direction. Her fur and skin look phenomenal. I also purchased a nutritional plan from one of your vets and she recommended the multi vitamin. I’m so thrilled with her improvements! Thank you for being there!!! I was having such a hard time getting her to eat – but not with Dr. Amanda’s plan! I’m totally thrilled. And here’s her adorable sleeping face”
Don't be fooled by Lola's size, this mast cell tumor dog is a fighter!

We are always so happy to meet amazing furparents, like Sherry, who are willing to do absolutely everything they can to make sure their little ones are loved and taken care of! We’re sending good and loving vibes to Sherry and her sweetheart, Lola.
