7 Ways to Spoil Your Fur Kiddo

Pet Care Tips 5 min read

After a long day, your fur kiddo is always there to cheer you up with cuddles, kisses, and sometimes a bit of “watch this, mom” goofiness. Whether they’re just being cute or busting out a new parkour move, the moments you spend with them are truly special, and wanting to spoil your fur kiddo a little here and there is completely natural! In fact, it’s those times you go an extra step to spoil them a little that help enrich their lives and create happy memories together. However, you also want to do it in a responsible way that won’t affect their behavior or health. So, here are 7 ways to spoil your fur kiddo with their wellbeing in mind!

1 – Celebrate Their Birthday / Gotcha Day

You may not know the exact day that your fur kid was born, but neither does your fur kiddo, really. Many pet parents choose the day they brought their fur kiddo home as their birthday or “Gotcha Day” (the day they “got you”), and it’s just as special.

To celebrate a birthday or Gotcha Day responsibly, make a list of your fur kiddo’s favorite things. Ideas can include:

  • Planning a playdate with their favorite fur friend
  • Giving them their favorite wholesome treats
  • Taking them to a new park, full of new things to smell and friends to meet
  • Organizing a fun photo opportunity with some party hats and props

To make sure they have a good time on their birthday, don’t overfeed them or give them too much human food. While it’s natural to want to give your fur kiddo a little extra on their Gotcha Day, ice cream and human cake can upset their tummies. Worse yet, human cakes can contain ingredients that are harmful to pets, such as xylitol. Instead, choose a natural indulgent dog treat that is vet-approved, like NHV Nutty Paw-Nanas, an irresistible peanut butter cookie just for dogs.

2 – Visit a Local Dog-Friendly Pet Store

If you have a local dog-friendly pet store in your area and your pup is leash-trained, then visiting your local pet store can be a great way to spoil them. The smells to enjoy, the sights to see… and don’t get us started on the toy aisle! Seeing what they naturally gravitate towards can be a fun way to let them play a role in picking out their own toys.

Just be sure to keep a close eye on your fur kiddo. While it may be tempting for them to put something from the store in their mouth, it can be a hygiene issue. Instead, let them sniff and stare from a distance before picking them up for purchase. They’ll be dreaming about the toy or treat they picked up all the way home, which is part of the fun!

3 – Give Them a Spa Day

In nature, grooming is one of the ways animals show love. It means they trust you enough to feel totally comfortable around you. And, with just a few simple steps, you can turn your regular grooming session into an indulgent spa day just for them!

Here are a few ideas:

  • Use dim lighting to help their body relax. Not too dark, or it could have the opposite effect!
  • If it’s bath time, use a dog-specific shampoo, formulated to be gentle and non-drying on their skin.
  • Between baths, you can give your fur kid a bit of aromatherapy with vet-approved sprays like NHV Coco Furcare
  • Incorporate massage! Using gentle circular motions in their favorite spots can relax the muscles and send them to dreamland.

4 – Get Them Personalized Nutrition

One way to upgrade your fur kid’s wellness routine is to start from the ground up. What goes into their bodies forms the building blocks of good health; the immune system, digestion, and even mental wellbeing are all affected by diet.

To get recipes built just for your dog, you can get a Personalized Veterinary Nutrition Plan for Pets with Dr. Amanda Nascimento, an expert in pet nutrition. A session with her will give your fur kid tailor-made recipes that consider their weight, their species, and even health conditions that affect what they can eat. This world-class service is the best way to spoil your fur kiddo with food without giving them human food or doggy junk food.

5 – Go for a Swim

For many pups, swimming is a rare treat. But this type of exercise is great for them and easy on the joints for pups with arthritis. The low-impact exercise may even be beneficial for them.

However, keep in mind that not all dogs are naturally great swimmers. Test out their abilities in shallow water, always use a doggy lifejacket, and avoid cold waters and strong currents. Also, keep in mind that some natural bodies of water aren’t always suitable to swim in due to algae and other bacteria that can make your dog sick. If you aren’t sure, it’s best to stay out of the water, or see if there are any dog swims in your area for some supervised fun.

6 – Go for a Special Hike

If swimming isn’t for your dog, then a nice long hike can be great. Research pet-friendly trails near you to discover some natural beauty for you and your pup. The sights, sounds, and smells on the trails can hypnotize your pup – it’s like their own theme park!

Still, there are a few things to remember. Pack for the occasion by bringing water for both you and your pup. Have a leash on hand in case there’s some wildlife (and always have strong recall training before heading out). Apply some pest deterrents before heading out, such as NHV Target Spray, which may help repel insects with lemongrass and other natural pest repellents.

7 – Make Treat Time Healthy and Exciting

On that note, one way to show you love your fur kiddo is with treats. Because let’s be real: treat time can be the most exciting part of their day.

But just because treats are good for their happiness, it doesn’t mean that they’re always good for their health (we humans can relate to this problem). That’s why making a swap to a healthier dog treat is the way to go. At NHV, we have a range of dog treats that do not have any artificial flavors, preservatives, or colors. In fact, many of our treats are made with only a single ingredient, such as NHV Wild Pacific Salmon Crunch, which is made from only wild-caught Pacific salmon.

However, no matter how healthy, remember that treats should only be about 10% of your fur kid’s daily caloric intake. This helps to keep things balanced and healthy.
