The Secret Life of Pet Bunnies: What They Do When No One Is Watching

Pet Care Tips 3 min read

Ever wonder what your bunny gets up to the second you close the door? While they might look like fluffy little statues when you are in the room, rabbits have lives all on their own.

Rabbits have lives all on their own

From little-known behaviors to secret body language, their solo hours are filled with a hilarious amount of personality. This is the secret life of pet bunnies!

What Do Rabbits Do When They’re Alone

Since bunnies are most active at dawn and dusk, a lot of their solo time is spent well: by relaxing!

You might find them in a perfect loaf or an opulent side-flop, dreaming of their next treat. But when they aren’t napping, rabbits actually like to do a bit of interior design in their free time. They may spend hours rearranging their space to their liking. Nudging blankets into new piles, tossing toys, and pausing to take a nice long grooming session.

Because their brains (and bellies) never stop, they also spend time foraging through their hay. But don’t let a bun spend too much time alone; they are social creatures who look forward to daily interaction with you. Dedicate special time together each and every day.

Rabbit Behaviors and Their Meanings

But what about that secret body language? With a keen eye, you can learn to speak fluent bunny, too.

The binkie is perhaps the most famous (and cute) of all rabbit behaviors. When a bunny is feeling pure bliss, they will suddenly leap into the air, twisting their body and flicking their feet. If you see this, you’re doing something right – they are totally happy!

When things have calmed down, you might notice your bun gently clicking or grinding their teeth as you pet them. This is known as a tooth purr. It’s similar to a cat’s purr, in that it shows they are deeply relaxed and comfortable. However, a loud or forceful grinding can actually be a sign of discomfort, so pay close attention to their overall behavior, too.

Another common but sometimes confusing behavior is flopping. This is when a rabbit suddenly rolls onto their side or back. While it can look alarming at first, it is actually a massive compliment. A rabbit will only expose their vulnerable belly when they trust you. And when they’re ready for a good nap!

Body Language of a Rabbit

There are times when it’s important to pay attention to their body for their health, too. Bunnies hide when they’re sick because it would make them a target in the wild. Pay attention to these signs to ensure that your little one is doing okay health-wise.

Sick Rabbit Body Language

The signs of a sick bunny include:

  • Hunched posture
  • Hiding in corners
  • Lack of movement
  • Loud tooth grinding
  • Uncomfortable-looking loafs
  • Refusing food

If your bunny is displaying these signs, be sure to get in contact with a vet, who can help figure out what’s wrong and make suggestions for their health.

Stressed Rabbit Body Language

The signs of a stressed bun include:

  • Freezing in place
  • Crouching low with tense muscles
  • Pinning their ears flat against their body
  • Rapid breathing
  • Dilated pupils
  • Hiding
  • Thumping the hind legs
  • Nipping

When your bunny is stressed out, it’s incredibly important to remove the source of stress. Fear and chronic stress can cause serious and lasting health consequences in your bunny, such as GI stasis in bunnies.

Supporting Your Bunny Naturally

Supporting your rabbit naturally is all about listening to those subtle cues and staying one step ahead of their needs.

For instance, if they are diagnosed with something that affects their immune system, then you may like to support them with supplements. NHV Stimmune can help benefit autoimmune conditions, skin allergies, and chronic infections while supporting their overall wellness.

Likewise, NHV Multi Essentials may help promote strong muscles and bones in bunnies. It has a rich diversity of vitamins and minerals.

You can think of supplements as the third step in any bunny’s health matter. The first step is to recognize the signs that something is the matter by knowing their body language. The next step is to get support from an expert – ie, your vet. Then finally, daily habits and holistic changes like supplementation can support your bunny in ways that add up.

With this in mind, you’re set to be the best possible bunny parent, enjoying many happy years together.
