Toxoplasmosis in cats – Mario the royal cat’s natural regimen

Toxoplasmosis in cats? What is that?

This is a disease contracted by a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. It is often found in raw meat and even in garden soil.

How do cats get toxoplasmosis?

Due to their hunting nature, cats will often kill and eat wild animals such as birds and mice which are carriers of the parasite. It’s highly contagious and can be passed on between cats through their feces. Once infected, the parasite thrives in the intestines where it lays eggs. Immature eggs called oocysts are shed in the feces. The cats will shed the oocysts for up to 2 weeks after the initial infection.

Our furriend Mariotheroyalcat aka “Maro” had the unfortunate experience himself and his pawrent came to NHV for help!

How do I know if my cat has toxoplasmosis?

Although most cats become immune due to exposure to the parasite, those who have not may experience diarrhea and loss of appetite. The disease may also affect a cat’s lungs, liver, and nervous system. This often happens when vulnerable kittens in the womb are exposed to the parasite and are far more likely to display symptoms than adult cats.

What can I do to help my cat with toxoplasmosis?

If your cat is suspected of carrying the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, you must have them tested at your veterinary office. If the test is positive, it’s unlikely your cat is shedding oocysts after the initial 2 week period. If the test is negative it means he’s either not been exposed and could become infected and shed oocysts but again for only 2 weeks.

Cats that are capable of shedding eggs should be isolated to prevent compromising humans and other pets. Be sure to clean the litter box and bedding a couple of times per day and wear disposable gloves to prevent contamination.

Antibiotics are often prescribed to clear symptoms of toxoplasmosis but do not kill the parasite. Your pet will shed the eggs for 2 weeks and be done so long as they don’t get re-infested.

NHV supplements will help to alleviate symptoms and prevent the recurrence of the infestation as well. The Parasites Kit contains Inulin PK, Milk Thistle, and Multi Essentials. This combination helps to eliminate the parasites, support a compromised liver, and ensure that your cat absorbs the vitamins and nutrients that are beneficial to their health. BK-Detox helps to cleanse the blood of toxins and Yucca has anti-protozoa properties and is recommended for safe, long-term use. Between all these different supplements, based on your cat’s symptoms, we can surely recommend a suitable regimen for your cat with toxoplasmosis.

How Can I Prevent This?

  • Keep your cat indoors. This will help prevent “hunting” and exposure to the parasite.
  • Clean the litter box frequently
  • Have your cat tested at your veterinarian’s clinic
  • Use precautions such as disposable gloves when cleaning your cats litter box
  • Always wash your hands afterwards
  • By taking these steps, both cats and humans can remain safe and healthy!
  • If feeding your cat raw diet, ensure that the food is stored in the freezer and not left unattended outside it

Maro is happy and healthy and continues to make us all here at NHV laugh with his adorable antics!

Mario the Royal Cat took four supplements – Yucca, BK Detox, Milk Thistle, and Inulin PK along with vet-prescribed medications. After 4 months his toxo status was normal and his ALT levels were healthy. He is now continuing to take Yucca and Milk thistle for a little longer to ensure that his gut, his liver, and his kidneys continue to be supported for a little longer as he continues to recover.

The hooman slave is going to be buying more supplements for my liver as maintenance as I’ve almost reached the end of the current ones I have!

PS: Maro can be a terribly fussy eater and did not enjoy the herbal and slightly bitter taste of the supplements at first. So taking the supplements directly from the dropper is a no-go. 🙅‍♀️ But after a few days of transitioning, he now no longer cares whether the supplement is in his food or not. FYI, we add a total of 2ml of the supplements into his food twice a day.

If your cat is active outdoors or eats a raw diet, it would be a great idea to use NHV Inulin-PK preventatively and keep your kitty protected from any internal parasites. Please ask us for customized pet health advice by sending us a message!
