Hearing your furkiddo coughing and having a hard time breathing is such a scary experience for a pet parent and it is usually just as scary if not scarier for the pet experiencing it. Feline asthma and bronchitis are unfortunately common in cats and they both come with coughing and stress. Pet parent Genevieve was going through this with her kitty, Dorito.
Feline bronchitis is inflammation in the bronchi or the lower airway which causes coughing and difficulty breathing. Asthma and bronchitis go hand-in-hand and are often considered to be the same syndrome in cats.
The source that is causing the inflammation in the bronchi is often very difficult to identify. With feline asthma, it is usually triggered by an allergen like cigarette smoke, fragrances, mold or dust, cleaning chemicals, and even cat litter dust.
When diagnosing feline bronchitis, your veterinarian will likely test for other conditions to rule out other underlying conditions. They may also test to see if the lack of oxygen caused by the bronchitis has affected other parts of the body including the brain.
At ten years old, Genevieve’s kitty, Dorito was diagnosed with chronic bronchitis. Bronchitis that lasts a short period of time and comes on suddenly is called acute bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis is when the inflammation of the bronchi lasts for a longer period of time (at least a few months) and may cause lasting inflammation or damage.
Chronic bronchitis is when the inflammation of the bronchi lasts for a longer period of time.
Dorito had already been previously been diagnosed with a congenital heart murmur. In cases where a heart murmur is related to structural heart disease, cats may have symptoms like coughing and exercise intolerance. It could have been easy for Genevieve to pass off the symptoms as part of his existing condition, but she knew that he needed to be checked by a vet.
He was having 2-3 coughing fits a day where he’d hide under something, or wake himself up. He also developed a sporadic snore and wheezing 24/7 and sometimes with labored breathing!
When they went to the vet, an x-ray revealed that Dorito had bronchitis.
Genevieve followed her vet’s advice for treatments and she did her best to keep her home clean and free from allergens that may aggravate Dorito’s bronchitis. After trying their best with the treatments, Dorito was not improving as much as Genevieve wanted. She was losing sleep from his loud snoring and labored breathing but didn’t lose hope that she may find something to help her kitty.
Then I finally stumbled across this site and emailed Pet Expert, Dr. Rebecca. She was SO nice and compassionate! She advised me which asthma/bronchitis to choose based on his symptoms, and also suggested something else (Yucca) and Dorito INSTANTLY sounded better, there’s NO snoring, wheezing, heavy breathing after ten days, he’s barely having one asthma attack a day now, and it isn’t so harsh in sound!
Dorito takes the NHV Asthma Kit For Respiratory Relief contains two supplements, Resp-Aid and Stimmune. He also takes NHV Yucca for additional support.
Resp-Aid is our supplement formulated specifically to help with respiratory issues. Resp-Aid uses a blend of herbs to naturally help ease chest and nasal congestion, help reduce inflammation and aid in fighting infection. A study conducted by the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Calgary showed that Resp-Aid can help relieve asthma and beneficial for support pets with respiratory conditions.
Stimmune is formulated to help support a balanced immune system and healthy histamine response. It helps fight against allergy symptoms and infections that may be related to asthma and bronchitis.
NHV Yucca was recommended for Dorito as the yucca root is known for being very beneficial for helping reduce inflammation and contains active ingredients that encourage the body to produce its own natural corticosteroids.
Our pet experts always offer recommendations based on the diagnosis of your pet, other health conditions that they may have, and the symptoms they are experiencing. For other kitties with bronchitis, the Bronchitis Gold Relief Kit may be better suited for their symptoms. The bronchitis kit contains Resp-Aid, Stimmune, and BK-Detox.

NHV Yucca is used for cats as a supplement to provide nutrients, and may be helpful for discomfort, inflammation, and to increase or balance the appetite.
Yucca is used in cat food as well as food for other animals around the world. Its root is a highly nutritious herb that’s rich in vitamin C, beta-carotene, B vitamins, magnesium, iron, calcium, manganese, protein, niacin, and phosphorus.
Yucca contains two very beneficial compounds: sarsasapogenin and smilagenin. These two compounds work on the mucous membranes of the small intestine. These compounds help with the penetration and absorption of minerals and vitamins. Sarsasapogenin and smilagenin are known as steroidal saponins (phytosterols) which act as precursors to corticosteroids produced naturally by the body.
Steroidal saponins support the immune function of the body while stimulating and supporting the production of its own corticosteroids and corticosteroid–related hormones. Due to this action, studies conducted on Yucca have shown that it may be beneficial and effective for discomfort relief and inflammation in conditions such as arthritis. Yucca for cats may also be a natural appetite stimulant and may also help reduce the production of urease, which contributes to the unpleasant odors of urine and feces in some cats.
Yucca - Commonly used for supporting arthritis, as an anti-inflammatory, nutritive, antitumor, and digestive supplement.

Help support healthy breathing and soothe inflammation in the airways with NHV’s Bronchitis Gold Relief Kit - a natural supplement bundle for acute or chronic bronchitis in dogs and cats.
What is Bronchitis?
You may have heard of bronchitis, but what is it? The bronchi are the larger airways that move air through the lungs. Air is taken in through the nose and trachea (windpipe), where it goes into the chest and branches into two bronchi, one in each lung. Bronchi are tube-like structures made of cartilage that branch into much smaller structures that carry oxygen into the body. When injured by irritants (eg. air pollution, cigarette smoke, a buildup of toxins, etc.), the body responds with a healing process that is inflammatory by nature. These cycles of irritation and inflammation may result in the overproduction of mucus in the airways. The mucus obstructs smaller bronchial pathways, which triggers coughing, leading to more irritation, inflammation, and mucus. It is a vicious cycle.
As pet parents, we all want what's best for our little ones. So if your furkiddo has recently been diagnosed with bronchitis, luckily there are natural ways to support them to manage symptoms and help them get back on their feet! With bronchitis in dogs or bronchitis in cats, your furry friend may be suffering from constant inflammation and mucus in their airways. In that case, there is a high likelihood that an infection may develop and cause their immune health to weaken, especially if they are constantly trying to deal with an infection that won't go away. This weakened state may lead to a buildup of toxins in the body. Our Bronchitis Kit contains Resp-aid, BK-Detox and Stimmune, which work together to help improve your pet's natural defenses, as well as may help to relieve inflammation, help reduce excess mucus production, and promote healing.
If your pet is experiencing chronic bronchitis, consult your vet to see if there is an underlying cause. When you listen to your cat or dog coughing, the nature of the cough (eg. wet, dry, honking, etc.) does not necessarily provide any clues for its cause.
With bronchitis, the body's natural healing process involves inflammation, so it can be tough to relieve the persistent cough that comes with excess mucus. To help soothe the airways and respiratory system, Resp-Aid's expectorant and healing properties may help prevent mucus buildup and move it along as well as may help calm swelling in the chest and throat. Stimmune is beneficial for adding immune support with its antimicrobial and antibacterial properties while its many healing compounds may help to improve immune response. BK-Detox contains ingredients like cleavers, burdock, and gotu kola that work together to help flush toxins out of the liver, lymphatic system, and respiratory system. With fewer irritants present, the body is encouraged to rebuild and repair.
We know your pets are your family. That’s why we made our supplements for bronchitis in dogs and cats 100% natural, easy to administer (liquid formula) with human-grade ingredients.
