Dorito And Feline Bronchitis

Orange long haired cat sitting near a window - Dorito and feline bronchitis

Hearing your furkiddo coughing and having a hard time breathing is such a scary experience for a pet parent and it is usually just as scary if not scarier for the pet experiencing it. Feline asthma and bronchitis are unfortunately common in cats and they both come with coughing and stress. Pet parent Genevieve was going through this with her kitty, Dorito.

What is Feline Bronchitis?

Feline bronchitis is inflammation in the bronchi or the lower airway which causes coughing and difficulty breathing. Asthma and bronchitis go hand-in-hand and are often considered to be the same syndrome in cats.

Common Symptoms of Feline Bronchitis

  • Abnormal breathing sounds (wheezing)
  • Coughing
  • Difficulty breathing (usually indicated by open mouth breathing)
  • Lack of energy or inability to exercise

Causes of Feline Bronchitis

The source that is causing the inflammation in the bronchi is often very difficult to identify. With feline asthma, it is usually triggered by an allergen like cigarette smoke, fragrances, mold or dust, cleaning chemicals, and even cat litter dust.

Diagnosing Feline Bronchitis

When diagnosing feline bronchitis, your veterinarian will likely test for other conditions to rule out other underlying conditions. They may also test to see if the lack of oxygen caused by the bronchitis has affected other parts of the body including the brain.

Dorito’s Diagnosis

At ten years old, Genevieve’s kitty, Dorito was diagnosed with chronic bronchitis. Bronchitis that lasts a short period of time and comes on suddenly is called acute bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis is when the inflammation of the bronchi lasts for a longer period of time (at least a few months) and may cause lasting inflammation or damage.

Dorito had already been previously been diagnosed with a congenital heart murmur. In cases where a heart murmur is related to structural heart disease, cats may have symptoms like coughing and exercise intolerance. It could have been easy for Genevieve to pass off the symptoms as part of his existing condition, but she knew that he needed to be checked by a vet.

He was having 2-3 coughing fits a day where he’d hide under something, or wake himself up. He also developed a sporadic snore and wheezing 24/7 and sometimes with labored breathing!

When they went to the vet, an x-ray revealed that Dorito had bronchitis.

Supporting Dorito

Genevieve followed her vet’s advice for treatments and she did her best to keep her home clean and free from allergens that may aggravate Dorito’s bronchitis. After trying their best with the treatments, Dorito was not improving as much as Genevieve wanted. She was losing sleep from his loud snoring and labored breathing but didn’t lose hope that she may find something to help her kitty.

Then I finally stumbled across this site and emailed Pet Expert, Dr. Rebecca. She was SO nice and compassionate! She advised me which asthma/bronchitis to choose based on his symptoms, and also suggested something else (Yucca) and Dorito INSTANTLY sounded better, there’s NO snoring, wheezing, heavy breathing after ten days, he’s barely having one asthma attack a day now, and it isn’t so harsh in sound!

Resp-Aid is our supplement formulated specifically to help with respiratory issues. Resp-Aid uses a blend of herbs to naturally help ease chest and nasal congestion, help reduce inflammation and aid in fighting infection. Stimmune is formulated to help support a balanced immune system and healthy histamine response. It helps fight against allergy symptoms and infections that may be related to asthma and bronchitis.

NHV Yucca was recommended for Dorito as the yucca root is known for being very beneficial for helping reduce inflammation and contains active ingredients that encourage the body to produce its own natural corticosteroids.
