“He Is My Heart and Soul;” Meet Nix, the Cat with Kidney Disease and IBD

Inspiring Pet Tails 3 min read

Nix’s full name is “Phoenix,” and boy does he sure live up to his name. Once struggling with a rare virus as a kitten, to living as a cat with kidney disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Nix figuratively rose from the ashes thanks to the constant love and support from his pet parent, Gard.

A Rocky Start

Nix was just five months old when Gard found him in a parking lot. He had a swollen eye, suspected to be from a fight with another animal. With a big heart for the little creature, Gard called the local shelter, who came to take him in.

Over the next few days, he kept thinking about this little cat. The shelter reported that things were rough – he had a suspected calicivirus, which can cause intense respiratory infections. Still, he kept checking in, and the last call seemed to be fate:

She said it was fortunate that I did not hang up…she was heading out the door with him in a carryall to be taken to the Vet to be euthanized. She explained that Calici virus is contagious to all the other cats and dogs in the shelter and that he was responding poorly to treatment.

Well, Gard knew in that moment that little Nix needed him. He told them to wait – he was coming to adopt him. He scooped him up from the shelter and took him to the vet.

But his troubles continued. The vets explained that he seemed to be in pretty rough shape, using up his nine lives very quickly. The calcivirus was taking its toll. One time, when Gard was dropping Nix off at the vet’s office, they even thought it was for euthanasia, which would be twice in his life people assumed he couldn’t make it.

Instead, Gard chose to pursue treatment, and Nix stayed at the vet’s for five weeks. But finally, after a long wait, he could bring his little furball home.

A Happy Furmily, Holistic Support

Nix proved everyone oh-so wrong. Not only did he live, but he is thriving thanks to Gard even 16 years later!

My Jet Black little furball was released and I brought him home on October 31 Halloween 2010. The rest has been 16 years of pure joy. Historically, black cats are associated with bad luck. This one proves that theory to be oh so wrong…

Today, Nix still has some health struggles, which is understandable given how rocky his start in life was. This kitty lives with kidney disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

Inflammatory Bowel Disease and chronic kidney disease are two very common conditions that often go hand in hand for our older feline friends. Think of IBD as ongoing irritation and inflammation in the digestive tract. This makes it tough for their body to properly absorb nutrients

Kidney disease means a kitty’s kidneys are struggling to filter out waste. Instead of clearing toxins, the kidneys work overtime, causing waste to build up in the body. This can make your fur kiddo feel nauseous and tired.

As a loving pet parent, Gard does everything he can for his little one’s health and happiness. That’s why he incorporated NHV natural supplements for his care. Nix takes NHV Natures Immuno. This 100% natural blend has mushrooms that have been used for 100s and even 1000s of years in traditional healing practices. When used daily, it may help provide antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and immune-balancing effects.

Gard shares that it’s been a part of their daily care routine for two years now:

I have been using NHV’s Immuno for immune support for my little guy Nix (Phoenix) for about 2 years now. Although I can’t be 100% sure, I do believe the product is helping him manage both Kidney disease and IBD

Gard took a chance on a little cat he found in a parking lot and was able to enjoy 16 years and counting thanks to that decision. He describes Nix as his heart and soul, a feeling many pet parents understand.
