“We Didn’t Want to Give Up;” Charles and Feline Kidney Disease

Inspiring Pet Tails 3 min read
A cat with a stern face.

This good boy is Charles Thickens. Don’t be fooled by his grumpy-looking face; Charles loves his family and they love him back, even though he sometimes gives them a bit of cattitude!

For eleven years, Charles’ owner Jon has taken care of this sassy-looking cat, giving him lots of love and care. However, as many cats will (an estimated 30-40% of cats over 10 years old), Charles developed Feline Kidney Disease. This condition can make daily life more difficult for cats, but thankfully though, Charles had Jon to help him.

From the Streets to Their Hearts

A chance meeting with a street kitten led Jon and his wife to find Charles Thickens! Walking right up to the couple as they were walking around, Charles seemed to practically choose them to be his forever family then and there!

About 11 years ago now, my wife and I were walking one night through a neighborhood. We heard a kitten meowing from the distance and saw this baby running towards the front porch of a home. He immediately started rubbing his head against our legs and rolling around on the ground playing!

While Jon and his wife debated whether or not to keep this little furry wonder, Jon clearly lost that debate – but he couldn’t be happier to! Charles Thickens became family, and the rest is history.

A New Challenge: Managing Feline Kidney Disease

The love for Charles Thickens only grew with age. However, along with age, sometimes new health and wellness challenges appear. For Charles, this was Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

CKD in cats is an abnormality of kidney function, which can make fur kiddos uncomfortable. The symptoms include lethargy, increased thirst and urination, decreased appetite and weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, and more.

For Charles, there weren’t any obvious signs except for some weight loss. When his family took him to the vet, it was really shocking to learn that his numbers were so low that his vet didn’t expect him to live much longer.

True enough, Charles’ condition grew worse despite treating his condition with their veterinarian’s recommendations. His hind legs became limp, he stopped eating and drinking, and he had to be carried to the litter box. It must have been incredibly difficult to see their fur baby like that.

We didn’t want to give up, cause that’s what it felt like, but we couldn’t watch him like this. He declined so fast.

One night, Jon’s wife came across an ad for NHV. The two researched more, and chose to try Tripsy, our natural formula for pets with kidney and bladder troubles.

How Tripsy Helped Charles Thickens

Tripsy is a vet-formulated and vet-approved natural support for pets like Charles. Tripsy has Stone Root, Parsley Piert, Wild Hydrangea, Gravel Root, Echinacea Purpurea, Marshmallow, and Oregon Grape, which may help with inflammation, kidney repair, and more.

Herbal formulas like Tripsy may be used alongside your veterinarian’s recommendations, so long as it is spaced at least a couple hours apart from vet-prescribed meds.

In the first few days, Jon noticed small improvements in Charles. He wasn’t as lethargic and seemed to become more aware. After even more time, he was back to walking. And after about 2 weeks, the changes were even more apparent; Charles was eating, drinking, running around, and even playing!

I’m not saying this is a miracle medicine, but it was for us and we’re going strong. Charles Thickens was diagnosed and given days to live. That was almost 8 months ago and he’s doing better each day!

It is no doubt a difficult journey to help a cat with CKD, but Jon and family prove that there are always things that we can do to help our fur kiddos feel more like themselves again, and it fills our hearts with joy to have played a role in helping this special cat feel better.
