When your fur kid is asleep and they’re chasing something in their sleep, it’s easily one of the cutest things in the world. While their sleep can give us cute moments like these, it can also give a look into their health and wellbeing. This is the secret life of your sleeping dog!
The Importance of Good Sleep for Dogs
Sleep has more functions than you’d think, even for our pups. Sleep is when your pup’s cells undergo repair, keeping their muscles and tissues strong after injury or exercise. Rest is also an important part of the immune system, giving it a chance to fight sickness.
But it goes beyond that, too. A good, deep rest actually plays an important part in your dog’s brain health and memories. When their brain is resting, it’s helping to encode the day’s memories. So, the more their brain gets deep, restful sleep, the better their memory may become.
How Much Sleep Do Dogs Need?
Every pup is different, and so is the amount of sleep they will need. But in general, good sleep times are approximately:
- 16 – 20 hours for puppies
- 14 hours for adult dogs
- Extra time for senior dogs
It is important to know your pup’s average sleep time. If they start sleeping a lot more or a lot less, it is worth mentioning this to your vet. It could be that their achy joints are making it difficult to get comfortable, anxiety is keeping them awake, or hypothyroidism is causing extra sleepiness.
What Do Dogs Dream Of?
When your dog twitches, they are usually reliving their day. Research shows that dog brains process sleep much like ours do. They dream about their favorite everyday moments: chasing a ball, sniffing new paths, playing with you, or mastering a new trick. Those cute little sleep-runs are just your pup replaying their best memories – but don’t wake them up! When they’re deep in sleep, they’re entering REM-sleep (rapid eye movement). If you wake them from REM sleep, it can leave them tired the next day. This includes doggy nightmares – yes, our pups can sometimes have nightmares, too!
The Pre-Sleep Ritual
Have you ever noticed how your dog spins three times before going to bed? Or maybe they rearrange the blankets or dig at the carpet a little? Fun fact: this adorable little routine is actually their instincts at work. In the wild, circling and clearing away tall grass can scare off pests while creating a comfortable resting spot.

Even in the comfort of their home, a pre-sleep ritual helps to signal to their brain that it’s time to unwind. Watching how easily or intensely your fur kid does this routine can tell you a lot about their comfort. If they pace a lot or have trouble getting comfortable, it could be a sign they are anxious or that their joints are stiff.
Morning Ritual To Start the Day Right
Dogs thrive on routine. In fact, a change in their routine can be a big source of stress for your little one. Here are a few ways to give them the best start to their day:
- Gently wake them up. Some fur kids get up when you do, but a gentle pat if they’re still asleep can help them wake up calmly.
- Go for a potty break. Your dog may need to go to the bathroom first thing in the morning. By consistently letting them go outside, you also teach them that they can reliably relieve themselves, which may help to reduce nighttime accidents.
- Balanced breakfast. Good nutrition will give them energy to play and start the day off right.
- Supplement time! Whether you’re giving them NHV supplements for general wellness or a specific health condition, most are taken twice a day. Give them their morning dose to help them stay on track.
- Do a bit of training. Grab your pup’s favorite healthy treats and do a bit of training while their mind is fresh.
Even though life can have its variations, it’s best to keep a steady routine if possible. It may be helpful to keep a morning to-do list near their food bowl to make sure you’ve done everything.
Tips to Help Your Fur Kid Get a Good Rest
To help your pup get a good rest, having a cozy, dedicated sleeping space is imperative. Make sure their bed is placed in a quiet area away from high-traffic zones, cold drafts, and sudden household noises.
However, if chronic stress, separation anxiety, or loud noises are still affecting their ability to get a restful sleep, even the comfiest bed might not be enough. You will need to address chronic stress

Holistic Support for Rescued Puppies and Kittens
A rescued puppy or kitten is a welcome addition to any home! But sometimes, your new furbaby has encountered trauma or a severe illness before coming home with you. If you’re a new pet pawrent asking yourself if there is an adopted puppy kit or kitten kit out there?
So many young pets are rescued from terrible situations or surrendered to shelters, so they may experience a lot of stress going from one place to another. Small changes can feel incredibly stressful for animals which can present as destructive or aggressive behavior. Unfortunately for rescued pets, it is hard to know what environment they were in or what they were eating before coming home with you. Foodwise, they may have been eating low-quality processed food that is missing essential nutrients or maybe they were malnourished (from living on the streets). To help ease your new furry friend into their forever home, we recommend adding natural supplements to their daily meals after they have been vaccinated and weaned. This preventative care plan is beneficial for supporting their overall health and to help slow down or prevent chronic illness (which may develop due to age, genetics, or environment). NHV Shelter Pet Happy Starter Hit contains Matricalm, Multi Essentials, and Plantaeris. This bundle of natural supplements has been formulated to calm stressed and anxious pets, help fill nutritional voids, and support quick recovery from diarrhea (which is prone to happen in young animals). To learn more about caring for your new furbaby, read our post on simple steps for a healthy puppy or kitten.
How NHV Supplements Provide A Comprehensive Adopted Puppy Kit and Kitten Kit
Changes in your new puppy or kitten’s environment can cause a lot of anxiety, especially if they are super sensitive (some breeds of dogs and cats are more prone to stress) or have experienced trauma. To express this nervous energy, they may exhibit destructive or aggressive behavior. To help ease your fluffy friend into their forever home, Matricalm’s blend of herbs like passion flower, chamomile and valerian contain soothing properties that may relax the body and improve the feeling of relaxation while the smell of lemon balm may instantly calm your pet’s nerves. Multi Essentials is like a multi-vitamin for pets. It helps to fill nutritional voids (especially for malnourished pets) and supports essential processes like blood pressure and metabolism. Puppies and kittens have very sensitive tummies so if you’re trying out different foods for them, or they mischievously snack on things they aren’t supposed to, Plantaeris’ blend of ingredients help to relax muscle cramping and helps lubricate delicate intestinal mucosa to aid proper digestion and help restore healthy bowel movements.

Pet's Weight Dosage
To be taken twice daily. All NHV supplements are designed to be used together, and can, therefore, be given at once for convenience.
Select your pet's weight to determine the correct dose.
To be taken twice daily. (Each supplement) Determine your pet’s weight and then use the easy chart below to determine the correct dose. This is the minimum dosage.
Pet's Weight Dosage
0 - 15 lb = 0.5 ml
16 - 30 lb = 1.0 ml
31 - 45 lb = 1.5 ml
46 - 60 lb = 2.0 ml
61 - 75 lb = 2.5 ml
Over 75 lb = 3.0 ml
For small animals (rabbits, ferrets), avians and reptiles use 1 drop for every 2 lb of body weight.
Long term use: Feed recommended dosage every other day (1 day on 1 day off). If used in large dosages or over a long period of time it may become irritating to the stomach lining. Some pets may require a larger dosage due to their metabolism. You can safely double the recommended dosage.
How to Administer: Shake well before use. The easiest method is to use the dropper provided and place the drops into your pet’s food or favorite treat. You can also use the dropper and squirt directly into the pet’s mouth. Some pets can be finicky, if this occurs consider hiding the drops in foods most pet’s love such as fish, chicken or yogurt or a favourite treat. If your pet only eats dry food then soak a few kibbles at feeding time.
For Best Results: Herbal dietary supplements are beneficial to the health and well-being of your pet and are safe for long-term use. Every pet responds to natural herbal supplements differently, therefore it is important to be consistent and administer the product daily. Supplements generally take two to four weeks to take effect, however this will vary from one animal to the next.
Product Storage: All NHV Natural Pet Products are pure herbal extracts and contain no artificial additives, preservatives or coloring. Shelf life after opening is 6 months and must be refrigerated after opening.
Cautions and Contraindications: Do not use Yucca in pregnant or nursing animals. Allowing breaks in feeding helps alleviate the possibility of a irritating effect on the digestive tract. Speak to your vet before using our products. A second visit is recommended if your pet’s condition does not improve, or deteriorates after continued use of the supplements. Our poor pups can easily get worried by loud noises or uncertain situations. When that fear becomes a trigger, it can lead to anxiety and chronic stress. Some common symptoms of stress and anxiety in dogs are:
- Trembling
- Hiding
- Pacing
- Destructive behavior
As it turns out, the brain and gut are constantly communicating and influencing one another in a relationship known as the “gut-brain axis.”
Over time, chronic anxiety in dogs may even lead to consequences for their physical health. This includes consequences like a weakened immune system, inflammation, and digestive upset (including diarrhea).
To help your pet cope with stress, natural supplements may play a supportive role in their daily wellness routine to help them in each of these areas.
Combatting Stress and NHV Lesstress
Natural supplements may offer additional support for your dog experiencing stress and anxiety. When taken daily, herbal formulas like NHV Lesstress may promote feelings of calmness.
In a calm state, a pet’s body can better repair the harms of stress, like inflammation and damage to the gut microbiome. Therefore, the importance of helping to keep your pet calm and happy is not just important for their mental well-being, it’s important for their physical well-being too.
Lesstress also contains ingredients that may support the immune system, such as Reishi, Eleuthero, and Echinacea Angustifolia.
Stress in Pets and NHV Probiotic + Prebiotic
Probiotics may help reduce stress in dogs by promoting a healthy gut, which is linked to improved mood and emotional stability. Some research even suggests that a healthy microbiome may reduce anxiety by influencing neurotransmitter production, such as serotonin.
NHV Probiotic + Prebiotic offers 7 strains of healthy bacteria. For example, Bacillus coagulans LBSC, which may soothe constipation, diarrhea, gas, indigestion, and IBS, or Lactobacillus acidophilus 033AE, which may help with immune functioning.
Supporting Your Dog with Stress and Anxiety
By addressing both the gut microbiome and the symptoms of anxiety, your fur kiddo may get better results than addressing one factor alone. It’s all part of the holistic care strategy: one where we look at all aspects of health at the same time, rather than one at a time.
Need help with your pet’s stress care plan, or have any questions about our supplements? You can reach out to our friendly Pet Experts on the NHV Contact Us page.

Shake well before use. The easiest method is to use the dropper provided and place the drops into your pet’s food or favorite treat. You can also use the dropper and squirt directly into the pet’s mouth. Some pets can be finicky, if this occurs consider hiding the drops in foods most pet’s love such as fish, chicken or yogurt or a favorite treat. If your pet only eats dry food then soak a few kibbles at feeding time. For Best Results
