constipation support
Nine years ago Barney was found wandering the streets of Los Angeles. Barney had suffered a fracture to his pelvis from an unknown cause. This fracture caused a portion of his pelvis to push on his colon which made it difficult for poor Barney to pass bowel movements. Two months after Friends of Animals rescued him, his new mom Valerie met him and fell in love.
Valerie reached out to NHV about a month ago looking for a solution for her furry fighter to help him soften up his stools. He was already taking Tripsy for healthy kidney function and maintenance but needed a little something extra to soften up his stools.
Maris was recommended to help ease Barney’s constipation.
Maris was recommended to help ease Barney’s constipation. A month later, Valerie is happy to report that a double dose of Maris has helped to ‘get things moving. It is safe to increase your fur kid’s dosages to up to double the recommended therapeutic dosage (if you feel they could use the extra support), but we recommend starting with the normal dosage and gradually increase.
Barney’s story is one of how far he has come along with the support of loving veterinarians, friends, and family. His transformation from a stray to a beloved friend is quite remarkable and shows how a little love can go a long way. We instantly fell in love with his sweet little face… How could he not wiggle into your heart? Here is Barney’s story in mom Valerie’s words:
Barney, a Corgi/Pittie mix, was found on the streets of LA starving (see attached photos after he had had his surgery). He was brought to a rescue that immediately took him to their veterinarian who at first thought he was a really old dog they were bringing in to put down. But when the doctor looked at his teeth, he realized Barney was maybe only 3 to 5 years old!
After some x-rays, the vet discovered a blockage which meant Barney couldn’t keep any food down. Most likely this was caused by the healed broken pelvis he had which literally pushes on his colon, making the passing of his stool a bit challenging if he doesn’t eat and drink properly. Living on the streets he was eating whatever he could find and most likely not drinking enough. His nickname at the vet’s office was “Skeletor!” Fortunately, the vet did an amazing job of removing a portion of his intestines, so Barney was able to eat and his colon began working again. == We adopted him in June of 2009, just 2 months after his surgery, and Barney has been a delight ever since. (We call him a Corgi Bull.) We’ve always had to be mindful of his diet, and it’s only in the last year or so that we’ve had some issues of constipation. At one point it was really bad so he was taking a prescription laxative.
It really got challenging last Autumn when Barney woke up with a senior vestibular disease, which is basically a case of vertigo. He of course couldn’t eat and the only food we could eventually get down to him was a cheap grocery store wet food. That definitely caused constipation, so we eventually weaned him back to his regular food, but off and on his constipation flared, and I did not want to continually have to reach for the Lactulose. That’s when a friend thankfully mentioned NHV’s Maris.
We tried a regular dose for about 10 to 12 days and saw no change, so after consulting NHV, we doubled the dose almost 2 weeks ago, and so far so good – truly a relief! I know Barney definitely feels better with that smile on his face, and so do we!
Causes of Constipation
One of the most frequent causes of constipation in dogs is dehydration. Some other common causes are internal obstructions that can compress the bowel from the outside (such as in Barney’s case) hernias, kidney disease, ingested hair or debris, side effects from medication, stress, parasites, and deficiencies in the diet. Depending on the severity, left untreated, constipation can become life-threatening!
Treatment
- Increase fiber and moisture intake. Feeding your dog a little bit of pumpkin with his food is a great way to prevent and cure constipation. Pumpkin is high in water content and a great source of fiber.
- Exercise. Just like humans, dogs need exercise and movement to encourage normal movement in the bowel.
- NHV Maris promotes soft stools while fostering good colon health. It works in chronic constipation and can help relieve gastrointestinal upset and megacolon. . The herbs are safe for long term use too! The vitamin rich and antispasmodic herbs gently encourage bowel movements and can help soothe irritated tissues—help fight bacterial infections in the gastrointestinal symptoms
We are so happy to hear that Barney recently celebrated his 9th rescue anniversary! Congratulations Barney… here is to many more happy years with your loving family!

What Causes Constipation in Cats?
Constipation occurs when a pet is unable to evacuate his or her bowels. When this occurs, water from fecal matter is absorbed by the colon, leaving a hard mass that is uncomfortable to pass.
Constipation may be caused by poor hydration or a dirty litter pan. Start by ensuring that your cat has easy access to clean drinking water and a clean litter box. Diet is another common factor. They may have ingested animal bones or other indigestible materials, like hair, certain plants, or litter.
Other possible causes may include:
- Chronic underlying conditions like kidney disease or arthritic discomfort
- Physical internal obstructions like a broken pelvis
- Some prescription medications
- Neuromuscular problems with the colon itself
- Anxiety
Constipation may be a sign of a more serious condition, such as inflammation of the colon, called colitis. If your kitty’s constipation is recurring, it’s important to schedule a visit with your vet to rule this out.
Relief for Cat Constipation with Natural Remedies
Maris is an effective remedy to soothe the discomfort and symptoms of constipation naturally. Maris is a gentle herbal formula that can be used long term if your kitty suffers from constipation. Holistic Rabbit Kidney Supplement Support
Sometimes it can be tricky to tell what is bothering your furry companion, because no two pets are alike! But a common health issue that affects our bunny pals is kidney disease. These two bean-shaped organs have several key roles: removing metabolic wastes from the body and maintaining the correct balance of water and electrolytes (salts) within the body. Another important role is producing essential hormones that help maintain healthy blood pressure, production of new blood cells, and allow the body to absorb salt. Lastly, the urinary system processes vitamin D - an integral component for calcium absorption and bone growth.
The two most common types of renal issues are kidney degeneration (often age-related) which can lead to organ failure and acute kidney failure, where symptoms develop suddenly over a few days or weeks and can lead to the kidneys shutting down quickly. This may cause irregularities in your bunny’s urinary output. To figure out if your furkiddo has kidney issues, your vet can run some tests like bloodwork, urinalysis, radiographs, ultrasounds, and/or CT scans, to further investigate their symptoms. The typical course of action for rabbit kidney problems includes intravenous fluid therapy (under the supervision of your trusted vet), the addition of glycoproteins and a kidney-specific, balanced diet.
Symptoms of Rabbit Kidney Problems
- Lethargy
- Lack of appetite
- Inappropriate urination
- Change in frequency of urination
- Straining to urinate
- Abnormal urine color
- Fever
- Soft stools, diarrhea, or constipation
- Possible seizures
- Tender kidneys (abdominal pain)
For kidney degeneration or acute kidney issues, we'd suggest adding a natural rabbit kidney supplement like NHV Tripsy™ to your bunny's daily feeding schedule. It can safely be used short-term as well as long-term as a natural health support. Tripsy™ promotes healthy kidney, bladder, and urinary tract functions and may eliminate kidney stone formation in all of your bunny pals (both young and old).
How NHV’s Supplements Ease Rabbit Kidney Problems
Kidney issues can cause a lot of stress and worry in your Lop and Lionhead pals. Ingredients like parsley piert and stone root have diuretic properties that gently regulate urine flow, if on the low/infrequent side, to help keep things flowing normally and prevent the formation of kidney and bladder calculi (often called stones). Herbs like Wild hydrangea and Gravel root have traditionally been used for supporting kidney and urinary health by helping to break down, dissolve and remove stones and prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Other ingredients like Echinacea purpurea and Oregon grape's defense against microorganisms help combat infections. And lastly, Marshmallow soothes irritated internal tissues and protects cells from oxidative damage.
Causes for Kidney Issues in Rabbits

- Stress

- Heart failure
- Blood infection
- Urinary tract obstruction
