Does Less Daylight Affect Your Pet’s Routine or Behavior?

Pet Care Tips 4 min read

As we approach fall and winter, the days start to get shorter with darker mornings and earlier sunsets. To help us humans adjust, the clocks fall back each fall. But how do these factors and clock changes affect our furry family?

While our furry companions can’t read a clock as we do, they have an internal body clock called the circadian rhythm. This built-in clock regulates many cycles and systems within the body, so when the light level changes, the balance in the body gets thrown off.

Yes, Daylight Changes Affect Our Pets

When the days get shorter and the clock falls back to account for it, we humans adjust to the new time. The circadian rhythm that influences the routine of your pet will no longer match their old schedule. An hour may not seem a lot to us, but for our pets who rely on a set routine with their circadian rhythm, an hour can throw everything off.

One of the biggest effects is feeding times. You may notice your pet demanding food an hour earlier than our usual time – that is because, according to their internal clock, it is time for food. They may lose interest in their food later when it has passed the time they are used to.

Walks may get delayed, which means bathroom breaks are pushed later. Anxiety and restlessness may increase over time, and you may even notice mood and behavior shifts in your little one.

Behavioral Changes Caused by Daylight Changes

Some common behaviour changes may include:

  • Grogginess and/or restlessness
  • Destructive behaviour like chewing and door-scratching
  • Potty accidents
  • Vocalizations
  • Over grooming
  • Anxiety and disorientation
  • Appetite changes

Are Cats Affected By Daylight Changes?

Yes, shorter days and clock adjustments also affect our feline friends too. Cats rely heavily on routines, and the fall and winter changes can disrupt the schedules they have for things like feeding, playing, and sleeping. Such unpredicted changes may result in stress, and you may see your kitty showing abnormal behaviours too.

Supporting Your Pet’s Routine as a Pet Parent

To help your little one prepare for the time change, it is recommended to adjust their schedule by 10-15 minutes each day, a few days before the time change. Colder and shorter days would also mean less exercise and outdoor time, which may lead to a lack of stimulation or boredom. Puzzle feeders and chew toys are a great way to keep your little one entertained. Play time with your little ones may also help with their mood.

Senior pets are more prone to being affected by this clock change and shorter days, as their declining circadian rhythm makes it harder to adjust to the changes. Their body systems are also more sensitive, meaning that they will react more strongly to any changes. Poorer eyesight may make them more prone to slipping and feeling anxious during night walks, and changes in feeding times may lead to an upset tummy. Potty accidents may also be more common with weaker bladder or bowel control. In addition to what we discussed earlier, here are a few additional ways to give our senior furbabies a bit of extra support:

  • Keep their beds away from cold flooring and open windows
  • Provide lots of reassurance to support their anxiety
  • Keep your house and yard well lit
  • Bring a torch on night walks, or choose well-lit areas
  • Gently massage their joints before a walk to stimulate and warm up the joints to prevent injuries

Remember Medication Changes

Little ones on medications may also need extra attention, as some medications are extremely time-sensitive, such as insulin and anti-seizure medications. We strongly recommend checking in with your vet before the time change to safely transition your little one to the new schedule.

Supporting Your Pet Through Seasonal Changes

Supporting your fur kiddo through seasonal changes can be done with natural supplements from NHV. These include supplements that support joints, anxiety, and dry paws.

  • NHV Old Timer: Our joint support supplement is an excellent way to encourage joint wellness during seasonal changes, when the cold and damp weather can worsen joint issues.
  • NHV Lesstress & NHV Matricalm: When the humans’ schedules change, pets can feel separation anxiety and worry. Both NHV Lesstress and Matricalm encourage normal relaxation levels with gentle herbs, but cats tend to prefer the taste of NHV Matricalm!
  • NHV Heal Care Ointment: For dry and cracked paw pads, NHV Heal Care is great to have on hand. It offers a moisturizing base of olive oil and beeswax, in addition to herbs like St. John’s Wort.

Meeting the Seasons’ Challenges Head-On

Fall and winter days with decreased daylight can be gloomy for both humans and our furry companions. Our furry friends have fewer resources and abilities to adjust to the changes in sunlight and time, but with the proper support and preparation, they can also thrive with us in these colder festive months.
